Jose A. Gonzalez-Flores contritely told a Chesterfield County judge on Thursday that he felt sad “in every way you can imagine” for taking the life of a 4-year-old boy, and acknowledged that he was “100 percent selfish” for fleeing the crash scene after plowing into the back of the family’s car on Belmont Road.

“If I could give my life for his I would,” he said in court before he was sentenced to serve four years in prison. “I made a huge mistake. I know I should have stayed” at the scene to help the child.

“I pray that you will find peace in your heart,” Gonzalez-Flores said to Elias Camacho’s mother and father as they watched from the courtroom’s front row. He asked for their forgiveness.

Back in Oct. 2001, my brother was killed in a similar fashion while on business in California. The perp was a 19 year old hispanic who was high on drugs and alcohol and also tried to flee the scene. He got four years too.

The kid's name was Cruz Alejandro Martinez and I've always wondered if he was an illegal

ICE Issues Detainers for Suspects in Deadly Chesterfield Hit and Run

Chesterfield County, VA _ U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed a detainer on the two men charged in connection with a Chesterfield hit and run that left a 4-year-old boy dead and his parents and 7-year-old brother injured.

The crash occurred the afternoon of Saturday August 25 at the intersection of Belmont Road and Sue Jean Drive.

Police had initially arrested Edilberto Hernandez-Perez, 28, but later determined that it was Hernandez-Perez's friend, Jose Gonzalez-Flores, 28, who was driving the 2011 Dodge Ram Pickup that rammed into a stopped 2000 Toyota Camry, then left the scene. Police say Gonzalez-Flores later abandoned the truck and went to Hernandez-Perez, who drove his friend home.

An ICE spokesman says in a statement that Hernandez-Perez is a Guatemalan national who is in the U.S. illegally. Gonzalez-Flores' immigration status is unclear.

They don’t care about that. There were 1MM+ on the Mall for the TEA party. NOTHING came of it except the Mall got cleaned up. No congresscritters were even remotely rattled. It has to really hurt to get their attention.

It means the punishment should fit the crime - not that one should never punish.
