The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 695 measles cases in 22 states.
"This is the greatest number of cases reported in the United States since measles was eliminated from this country in 2000," says a CDC statement issued late Wednesday.
The agency attributed the high number of cases primarily to a few large outbreaks — one in the state of Washington and two others in New York. The New York outbreaks are among the largest and longest-lasting since 2000.
"The longer these outbreaks continue, the greater the chance measles will again get a sustained foothold in the United States," the CDC said.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement that the rise in measles cases is "avoidable."
"Measles is not a harmless childhood illness, but a highly contagious, potentially life-threatening disease," he said. "We have the ability to safely protect our children and our communities. Vaccines are a safe, highly effective public health solution that can prevent this disease. The measles vaccines are among the most extensively studied medical products we have, and their safety has been firmly established over many years in some of the largest vaccine studies ever undertaken."
Azar said the CDC is prepared to support local public health departments in monitoring and responding to outbreaks.
The measles outbreaks were largely imported by unvaccinated travelers who were exposed to the disease in another country and then on their return to the U.S. exposed other unvaccinated people. If a community is highly vaccinated, then the outbreaks are minimal or don't happen at all.
"However, once measles is in an under-vaccinated community, it becomes difficult to control the spread of the disease," said the CDC.
One community in which there is a lot of misinformation about the measles/mumps/rubella vaccine is in New York.

Actually, this could be a good thing. All the pro-vaccine people technically have nothing about which to worry. All the people who are anti-vaccine technically will experience the result of their actions.
What is striking about the New York situation is the anti-Semitism shrouded under public health concerns. I have NEVER heard of such a local government response like this in any outbreak. Indeed, the 2014 measles outbreak in Ohio which was localized in an Amish community was not followed up by local police state controls over movement.
Even more interesting is how the local officials are getting pretty huffy about personal liberty in these cases. All you need is a little problem in someone's backyard to see whether or not they are a statist or not in their approach to life.

My granddaughter, who had been given the pneumonia shot, just got over three weeks of serious pneumonia and after trying three different antibiotics one of which caused her to be covered in a rash. Her pneumonia was so severe that they discussed putting her in the hospital.

So, when a epidemic strikes, should not the source be tracked?
Is the source US citizens who have visited certain foreign countries? If so we use to have vaccination recommendations to travel to certain countries?
Is the source a foreign national visiting the US? If so we use to have vaccination requirements or quarantines to gain entry.
I remember having to prove typhoid vaccination to gain entry to certain countries.
During the swine flu panic people were screened for fevers when they entered the US.
So who or what country is the source of the measles outbreak? Or is this just an attempt to through disinformation change laws regarding vaccinations? Something smells and the whole truth is not being told nor are all the options being discussed
