UK condemns U.S. application of Cuba sanctions to foreign companies

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain said it was concerned by new attempts by the United States to require foreign companies to abide by U.S. sanctions on Cuba that have been rejected by Britain and other European countries.

"The extraterritorial application of ... sanctions, which we consider to be illegal under international law, threaten to harm UK and EU companies doing legitimate business in Cuba by exposing them to liability in U.S. courts," Britain's foreign office said in a statement on Thursday.

"We will work alongside the EU to protect the interests of our companies," the statement added.

There are still a lot of active communists/Marxists in Britain. They hide in the Labor Party (KGB-West), some of the trade unions (Scahill’s old outfits), esp. in academia and in businesses who will deal with anyone.

England, it sucks no longer being the big kid on the block, doesn’t it?

You know, we owe you one burning of a famous government building for burning down our White House in the War of 1812.

Should it be Buckingham Palace?

Bush had an open window when the USSR collapsed to invade Cuba and stop this nonsense. Despite having control of both halves of Congress and a conservative USSC, he did nothing. Rather than breach an agreement with a government that no longer exists, he left the Cubans to their communism. And sanctions them for it to this day. You get more of what you put up with.

On a more amusing note, in the seventies, MLW-Worthington-Studebaker, yes that Studebaker, had a Canadian subsidiary that contracted to sell some locomotive engines to Cuba.

The US forced the American company to force its Canadian subsidiary to forego the sale. Canada protested to no avail.

At the time I wondered if the US feared a freight train invasion by Cuba. I could just see the rooster tails of sand ripped into the air as the locomotive engines hit the beaches of Miami.

“”We will work alongside the EU to protect the interests of our companies,” the statement added.”

Then piss on you! Go find somewhere else for “your companies” to pedal their $hit elsewhere. This is the basic problem we have with “business.” Their morals end at their wallets.

I’ll admit I’m not a fan of making foreign companies liable in US courts for most affairs that are legal in their home countries. But it’s good to see Trump enforce the Monroe Doctrine, and pressure Cuba to liberalize its society and economy. With only very few exceptions every country south of the USA needs major political reform. Europe gives Cuba a lifeline, like Russia gives Venezuela a lifeline. For the good of those countries, and their people, and the USA, reform needs to happen.

It is all very negative to USD. When even the UK is barking on US government using economy for political means it means you went too far.

When it is ascertained if they participated in a plot to remove our President, and if they ever decide whether they're an independent nation or a toy poodle of Germany, I still won't give a crap what they think.

You must be young. In the 80’s, Thatcher complained to Reagan about sanctions on the Soviet gas pipeline. That was during the height of the Cold War, when the Soviets came close to launching missiles at the US. People don’t use the USD because they like Americans. They use it because it’s got the smallest spread, and we allow them to run large trade surpluses against us. The Euros won’t stand for it. The day they allow foreigners to run large trade surpluses against them is the day the Euro becomes the primary reserve currency. Which is never. China could make its currency a world reserve currency, too. But it won’t, for exactly the same reason. The day it allows trillion dollar trade deficits is never.

When trade using traditional means is restricted it is only natural for involved parties to seek alternatives.

Changing currencies won’t change the basic reality - companies can sell to the US or they can sell to Cuba, but not both. While Russia would like Europe to be able to push back, the fact is that Europe is a collection of independent states, many of which are either US-leaning or understand that their ability to avoid becoming Russian oblasts rests on American military power. Now, there are any number of Russophile leaders in Europe, including Angela Merkel. But Central Europe, which is right next to the Russian hordes, will prevent the anti-American elements of the EU from organizing a united front against Washington.

Where is the idea of countries ‘becoming Russian oblasts’ coming from? It is a pure fantasy.

The Warsaw Pact wasn’t a treaty so much as a fig leaf for eventual Russian annexation of Central Europe and it definitely wasn’t a fantasy.
