Foxx and the Cops: As the Killing Season Begins this Smollett Spat Isn't Helping
The Chicago Tribune ^ | April 10, 2019 | Anonymous

The Chicago Police Department arrested Smollett, a TV actor, alleging he staged a phony hate crime. Foxx recused herself because of contact she'd had with Smollett's representatives. Nevertheless her office secured a 16-count indictment against Smollett, yet later abandoned the case without warning or good explanation. It turns out Foxx's recusal was informal. And by the way, she asserted, the odds of conviction were uncertain -- despite her top assistant's boast that the case was solid. Foxx also said violent crime cases are more important to pursue.

From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, 33 people were shot in Chicago, six of them fatally. In one incident Saturday, six people were shot outside a baby shower on the South Side.

Chicago police union President Kevin Graham piled on. He and about 30 suburban police chiefs said that Foxx should resign, though Graham's beef with Foxx goes beyond the Smollett case; he essentially sees her as soft on crime.

Others came to Foxx's support, notably at a Saturday news conference at the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition headquarters. U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush declared unhelpfully that the Fraternal Order of Police is "the sworn enemy of black people." Foxx also spoke at the event, where she wondered aloud what the Smollett case hullabaloo is really about. "As someone who has lived in this city, who came up from the projects of this city to serve as the first African-American woman in this role, it is disheartening to me," she said.

Let us re-establish some parameters: The controversy involves Foxx's handling of a high-profile case. This moment is politically charged because Foxx will soon seek re-election as an advocate of criminal justice reform, and she's signaling the view that letting Smollett go in exchange for his bail money is a fair resolution.

An ineffective prosecutor with a poor relationship with the police is no way to stem violence and halt the flow of blood in the streets.

Just so long as they leave the buildings alone. Shoreline Chicago is architecturally beautiful.

What Lil Mizz Cabrini-Green needs to understand is that SHE is a part of the problem. SHE is the reason why crime and murders in Chicago go up.

Letting criminals like Smollett go free only encourages other criminals to commit more crimes.

Then calla brutaha next time you are robbed or assaulted or need assistance.

They should reroute 911 to the Crips’ HQ (yeah, I know AKA the Rainbow Coalition).

Just declare “The Purge” to be the policy in Chicago and be done with it.

Why don’t the CHicago Police understand that she is basically ordering them to NOT Arrest Black People anymore? Let the Bullets Fly and Blood run in the streets then.

She is up for reelection. Who funded her last campaign and who is funding this one? Follow the money.

Most people have a sense that the punishment, or at least the restitution, should be in proportion to the harm done.

Smollet did great harm, and I am NOT talking about the investigation costs...

“... As the Killing Season Begins this Smollett Spat Isn’t Helping...”

There is no closed season or bag limit in Chicago. Don’t even need a license.

How much bail money did Smollett actually forfeit? More than likely, it was 10% or less than the actual bail. You forfeit it anyway when you buy a bail bond.

Other than high rolling drug dealers, almost nobody puts up their actual bail.

The author is bending over backward to pretend this is something other than it is.

...the perception Smollett was gifted with a celebrity swag bag of dispensation...

"Perception"? It was an in-your-face finger to the police and the public.

The connection isn’t direct between the Smollett fiasco and the pursuit and prosecution of armed street cretins.

Yes, it is. The message was very clear: have the right friends and you're fine. Play the race card and you walk. Lie and hire people to lie for you and you'll get away with anything, however preposterous. And have the media smoke-screen your getaway and you'll have the last laugh.

Just as preposterous as Smollett's little junior high school psychodrama is the response of the media, who now appear to be demanding that the whole thing be forgotten in pursuit of the real criminals. The distraction caused by this ridiculous con game sucked massive resources away from that crime fighting and the person responsible is flouncing away, smug and totally unaccountable. Smollett's tantrum cost lives.

With the new homosexual female mayor, there is no hope for sanity in Chicago. None.

Because what matters most to Chicagoans is having a state’s attorney’s office and a Police Department functioning at the highest level — especially during killing season.

Ahh, killing season.... If they require licenses, that could be a dandy source of revenue. "Sir, do you want a 5 or a 10 bag limit today?" --"It's starting to get hot, better give me a 10!"

I assumed they had already pulled out of the worst areas (judging by the murder rate).

If you watch “Seattle Is Dying”, you see exactly how bad it becomes when cops can’t do their jobs. They are very clear they feel useless, as politicians simply toss the criminal refuse back on the streets ASAP; they explicitly say they don’t understand what purpose they serve any more. They can’t protect anyone or enforce any laws; it is sad - and creepy - to watch the footage.
