A Grand Compromise on Immigration
The New York Times ^ | 24 March 2019 | Peter King and Tom Suozzi

Posted on 03/24/2019 4:58:32 PM PDT by Theoria

A bipartisan deal to bring millions of immigrants out of the shadows, and pay for a secure border.

Americans are frustrated by the inaction of their federal government on comprehensive immigration reform and border security. So are we.

We both represent districts on Long Island, and we have both worked on immigration-related issues for over 25 years — one of us, Representative Suozzi, from the perspective of immigrant’s rights as a mayor, as a county executive and now as a member of Congress; the other, Representative King, from the perspective of border security as a former county comptroller, and now as a congressman and former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

We come at this from different points of view and different parties, but with a shared commitment to finding a solution to our country’s border-security issues. Together, we have found common ground to address the problems faced by undocumented immigration and the need for robust border security.

For more than 30 years, our government has failed to solve these problems. This year, the American people endured the longest government shutdown in American history when lawmakers and the president failed to reach a spending deal that centered around border security and immigration along the United States and Mexican border.

Sure, and they don’t even enforce current laws. Employers go free; illegals enjoy a better life than citizens.

Americans are frustrated by the inaction of their federal government on comprehensive immigration reform...

That is complete BS. "Comprehensive immigration reform" is code for "let them become citizens." We have plenty of laws on the books regarding immigration. Americans are REALLY frustrated that we do not enforce them and that Obummer picked and chose which laws he wanted to enforce.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is complete BS.
Always remember what they mean by Comprehensive Immigration Reform, even when the person advocating it is wearing an R jersey.
They are a Bush League Republican, hell bent on abandoning the rule of law and surrendering the country.
Amnesty for 3 million resulted in 30 million more, why would we ever do that again?
“Americans are frustrated...So are we.”
At least the pinkos at the nyt are finally admitting that they aren’t Americans.
Today’s so called democrats insist Americans must allow illegals storm in here by the hundreds of thousands despite their cost to us of billion$ in tax dollars,which is never enough. Tax money that should be going to our citizens for their sustenance,health,education,and housing even infrastructure needs. But Americans must do the tax flagellating punishment because we’re the very rich United States and must divert those billion$ to fill the needs of those poor illegals plus give them the right to vote. Sustained by our tax money which our chuldren’s children if not aborted will be paying for.
What never gets mentioned in all of this is the lacking reciprocal treatment. If we applied that policy Because when an American citizen ever tries getting any of those handouts including voting when going to where the great undocumented come from That would never happen. This would not continue if we put into place a policy of reciprocal citizenship.
WHY ARE WE ALLOWING CITIZENS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
WHO ENTER US ILLEGALLY GRANT THEM RIGHTS
THAT THEIR COUNTRY DENY US HAVING
WHEN WE ENTER THEIRS LEGALLY TO VISIT OR RETIRE ???
It’s time we consider illegal entry by any person who is a non Mexican citizen illegally entering the United States through the US Mexican border a defacto Mexican citizen with limited Mexican constitutional rights subject to their laws while transiting. As well as any Mexican citizen entering illegally exempting those who do so legally and meet US citizenship requirements. All subject to reciprocal citizen treatment a citizen of the United States receives in Mexico through the Mexican constitution on citizenship .
Besides being unable to vote one must also be a citizen to own land and Mexico is very restrictive about granting citizenship. Because of that a US citizen besides not being able to vote,and cannot have title in their name to any land property in Mexico. And until that is changed the US and the affected state should consider making that reciprocal. Prohibiting any illegal entrant employment, voting, and land ownership privileges fully enforced ..
In other words Sneak into this country before expulsion no job no voting no landowning
Such promises were made as part of Simpson-Maoli but never fulfilled. We are not such fools as to be enticed into the same bad bargain again. You still owe us a secure border and comprehensive internal enforcement.
Actually, Trump made a very good offer to the Dems in February, but they were so obsessed with showing their power by denying the wall funding that they just blew it off. The Dems don’t give a darn about the DACA people or anybody else....it’s all about refusing to do anything Trump wants.
I wish he’d get out there and say that, because I think there are a lot of Latin American immigrants who like him. This includes even illegal ones who have been here for a long time. Much of this is because Obama’s policies towards Latin America sucked, since he took numbers off the legal LatAm quotas to give them to people from “Muslim lands.” So this meant there was less legal Latin American immigration, even though employers needed them and they had been coming and going for years. But Muslims were more important than anybody else under Obama.
The majority of voters would like a pathway to citizenship for the Dreamers while wanting no such thing for the people who brought them here, illegally. The Democrats would love to make them all legal while lowering the voting age. The large majority of posters here want them all gone ASAP.
This is a compromise, and if we can deal with Democratic shenanigans to increase the amount of voter fraud, this should be a decent enough compromise, if they can get it through. My feelings are that a bill like this will split the Democratic party and enrage the perpetually enraged progressives.
“Before any citizenship is entertained to the children of illegals, the border should be shut down first with a concrete and steel wall built. English should be the official language. Sanctuary cities and states should be outlawed. Mandatory E-verify. Remittances taxed. And no taxpayer benefits to illegals.”
False premise + faulty reasoning = useless conclusions.
You nailed it. It just never ends. Very few in our government are patriots who can think critically.
“comprehensive immigration reform”
The creature that just keeps coming back from the grave.
Thanks a lot, Peter King./sarc. You and your ilk are very much a part of the problem.
1-End ALL welfare and other payments to illegals.
2-End birthright citizenship and chain migration.
3-Strengthen E-Veirify and enact harsh fines for anyone hiring illegals.
4-Deploy enough manpower to turn back the current flood of invaders currently overwhelming the system.
5-BUILD THE F***ING WALL.
Then we’ll talk.
First, our plan would create a path to citizenship for approximately 1.9 million immigrants brought by their parents, without documentation
Trump proposed something similar to this back during the 1st shutdown in Jan 2018 in exchange for several pro-border and immigration reforms but was shut down by Schumer.
Before any citizenship is entertained to the children of illegals, the border should be shut down first with a concrete and steel wall built. English should be the official language. Sanctuary cities and states should be outlawed. Mandatory E-verify. Remittances taxed. And no taxpayer benefits to illegals.
that makes sense
First, our plan would create a path to citizenship for approximately 1.9 million immigrants brought by their parents, without documentation, when they were 18 or under, the so-called Dreamers. To be eligible, they must have graduated from high school; have no record of criminal activity; and be either in the military, working full time for at least three years or attending college.
We would extend similar coverage to the 400,000 people who were invited to America and given temporary protective status after facing natural disasters, violence and extreme poverty in their home countries.
... Finally, relatives of Dreamers, of T.P.S. recipients and of others who are undocumented — approximately 2.7 million more people — would be eligible for three years of protective status, renewable indefinitely, if they have been in the United States for a significant number of years and have no record of criminal activity.
Taken together, this represents five million people., [nonsense, it's probably twice or more than that, AND, it invites 100 time that, storming our border, overnight.
My polite response?
NO, thanks anyhoo. Without defended borders, we have no country.
First secure the country - not only the border, but all other points of entry. This would include some form of eVerify. Once we have control of the immigration, then we can discuss what else to do. Until then, nothing.
