Huawei, the Chinese telecoms giant, has hit the headlines over the arrest of the founder's daughter in Canada for extradition to the United States.
But the firm, which manufactures a range of technology, from network equipment to mobile phones, is on the agenda for other reasons, too.
Several governments around the world have blocked telecoms companies from using Huawei gear in next-generation 5G mobile networks, citing security concerns.
So far the UK has held back from any formal ban. So why is the company proving so controversial?
What is 5G?
Fifth-generation mobile broadband is coming over the next year or so, promising download and browsing speeds 10 to 20 times faster than those today's 4G networks can offer.
This superfast mobile connectivity means you might be able to livestream a high-definition film to your phone, say, or enjoy much higher quality augmented and virtual reality experiences while you're out and about.
It will also power the "internet of things", enabling connected machines, from traffic lights to driverless cars, to communicate with each other.
What is Huawei?
The company started out making equipment for mobile phone networks and has grown rapidly, eclipsing the likes of Nokia and Ericsson, to become a global leader.
More recently it has started making smartphones as well, and Huawei has now captured about 16% of the global market, making it the world's third-largest supplier after Samsung and Apple.
The firm's founder Ren Zhengfei, a former People's Liberation Army officer, started Huawei in 1987. It's based in Shenzhen, Guangdong, and is owned by 80,000 of its 180,000 employees.

The US points to Mr Ren's military background and its growing global role to argue it represents a risk to national security.
In principle, controlling the technology that sits at the heart of vital communications networks gives Huawei the capacity to conduct espionage or disrupt communications during any future dispute, particularly as more things, from autonomous vehicles to domestic appliances, become connected to the internet.
Countries using Huawei equipment monitor such risks carefully.

I remember when the USMC was publicly pissed at Obama for giving away 5G tech to the Chinese because that was the same tech that the USMC had used for their lateral unit comms for distributed operations.
By China’s own law Huawei (and other tech co.’s) is required to report to the Chinese government any security information it has learned.
Having spent time in China and I still regularly watch Chinese TV, I can say China has surpassed the U.S. technologically, especially in the area of consumer technology. China is now basically a cashless society, everything is done on your smartphone. The downside is the government knows everything you are doing, and with a press of a button can mess your life up (sorry, you don’t have privileges to buy airline tickets any more, etc.).
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, China is not our friend and will screw us over every chance they get.

While some is given, they steal most a lot of IP. They have no regard for the law. And their network of spies have been on American soil for decades with many becoming American citizens.
About a decade ago, I was negotiating a manufacturing deal for a small American company, and they really wanted the tech and wanted us to really open it up to them. Also, they demanded the rights to all of Asia. No way, we went with Flex.
I know of a small company in Iowa that had devices made in China, and they stole the IP and manufactured and sold them on the cheap, and the Iowa company went out of business.
But, what is interesting, they will copy stuff down to the physical defects.

No, by all means lets allow this company founded by a “former” PLA officer (now a Party member), developed by the PLA. Owned by the employees? Huawei must be the only company in mainland China not owned by the government. It grows because it is massively subsidized by the Party and because a relatively cheap product like this is set to takeover the entire world’s communication grid. China would never listen in to any private or military communications, right?
What could go wrong?
And every bit of that is tech that was developed here and either sold to them illegally, stolen by them, or was part of the mandatory “tech transfers” that were part of the old trade deal.
So is Huawei a security threat?
Is Facebook? Is Google?
Neither Facebook or Google deal with military, financial, banking, and economic communications. Huawei would handle all of that, and it would not be voluntary. Is allowing someone in China access to your bank account and SocSec number a security threat?
My answer would have been “yes” to all three.
But here’s the point, the U.S. has stopped being competitive—it let all its industry and technology get hollowed out and exported to China and other parts of Asia, and now everything is falling apart in the U.S.
For example, no one will tell you that the entertainment industry in Hollywood is sucking wind big time. All it can manage is one remake after another of old movies. Why? Because both Korea and China made the decision to try steal the world’s mass entertainment away from the U.S. and they have been largely successful. You want to watch a good, entertaining, imaginative TV show or movie? Then watch something Korean or Chinese—they are so much better made than anything in the U.S. now.
All Chinese multinationals have deep connections to the Chinese military.
YES!!! This gear is made to surreptitiously report ALL transactions and data back to China. It is built for 2 reasons, to make $s and take over the market and 2, to supply information back to the People’s army. Even if I didn’t know how their system works all you have to do is see who the Huawei leadership hang around with.
All we have to do is cut the head off the scumbag organizations that are doing this to us and it stops with a sudden quickness.
That’s a large part of what’s going to have to happen once the gloves come off and our side stops letting itself be played for the punk with this loser nice guy crap.
