Pelosi says she backs lowering voting age to 16

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) voiced her support on Thursday for lowering the federal voting age to 16, telling reporters during a press conference that doing so would be a boon to voter engagement in the U.S.

Pelosi said Thursday that lowering the voting age would drive interest in politics among younger Americans who are learning about the subject in high school. The Speaker said that changing the voting age to 16 would help drive a higher level of voter awareness and turnout.

"I myself have always been for lowering the voting age to 16," Pelosi said. "I think it's really important to capture kids when they're in high school, when they're interested in all of this, when they're learning about government, to be able to vote."

Pelosi's comments Thursday echoed those she has made previously, including in a 2015 New York Times interview in which the Speaker said she was "all for" lowering the voting age.

Pelosi told the Times that she wanted to expand voter access to 16 and 17-year-olds “because when kids are in school, they’re so interested, they’re so engaged.”

The California congresswoman supported a local ballot initiative in her home district of San Francisco in 2016 that would have lowered the voting age in municipal elections to 16, known as Proposition F, but the measure was defeated by single digits at the ballot box.

Members of Congress voted down an amendment to the Democrats' voting rights bill last Thursday that sought to lower the federal voting age to 16, an effort led by freshman Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.). Almost 130 lawmakers voted in favor of the amendment, which was described by advocates as a first of its kind proposal to make it to the...

Well if they’re going to reduce the voting age to 16 why stop there. Why not let kindergarteners sign up to vote?

The Rats Care nothing about the American voter. If they did they would lock down that southern border.

How about you must have paid taxes before you can vote? Or is that gunna be one of institutionally racist things? It would cut out illegals and those who havnt contributed towards society from deciding who should be spending the money the citizens put into it

That’s to make her eligible to vote because she has regressed mentally back to 16. Actually, most six year olds are far more coherent than her.

It works for them and other parts of Europe and Asia precisely because people who don’t think of the future are precisely the people who run into other people if given control of a vehicle.

It’s harsh, but it is also perfectly fair and their rate of auto collisions had reached a point where they really didn’t have much choice but to implement this.

Winter driving there is brutal when you are sober, and fatal to you and to others when you are not.

If this had been in place in 1984 I would have been able to vote for Reagan, pushing him from landslide to megalandslide. He needed just one more vote.

A little more seriously, the Constitution sets the voting requirement for the House as "... the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature." So if a state wants a voting age of less than 18 it can do it without Pelosi.

I adhere to the constitution. The founders were brilliant in thought and their ideals. The constitution was true and right in that only land owners should vote.

When we lost that; those that don’t pay for real estate tax, state tax, school tax, city tax etc. We became a welfare country. The democrats push many into non-property owners to keep them ignorant of this.

Sixteen year olds? Studies have proven the brain isn’t fully developed until at least 25. Millennials today, are still qualified as children under

Obamacare!

As Benjamin Franklin stated, “A replubic, if you ca keep lt.”

Of course she does. The more empty skulls full of mush voters the ‘RATS have out there, the better off the commie ‘RATS will be during the elections. Ignorant voters almost always vote for the ‘RATS. How does she feel about 16 year olds buying cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana and firearms? Nasty Nan is a lowlife, bottom feeding hypocrite.

...... There should be a set policy that the Legal Voting age is the same age as the Legal Age for the Military Draft. If you are old enough to vote for the leader of this nation then you are old enough to fight for the United States.

The voting age used to be 21.

It was lowered to 18, only because anyone old enough to fight for the country should have the right to vote.

I’m all for having 16 year olds to start paying taxes so they can truly appreciate how much it costs the taxpayers to send them to school while they are still in school.
