Meatless Mondays matter: In praise of New York City schools overhauling their menus once a week
By Jessica Scott-Reid Mar 12, 2019 | 10:25 AM
Building on a major expansion this past fall, Mayor de Blasio just announced that Meatless Mondays will be in public schools across the nations largest city starting next academic year.
Not surprisingly, immediate online reactions ignited increasingly common debates over the consumption of animal products, from concerns about forcing vegetarianism on children, to calls to remove dairy as well. Ultimately though, eliminating meat from school meals one day a week is a positive and necessary move, and it's something all school districts should consider.
Talking with one young student, Elah, de Blasio said he asked the fourth grader what she thought of going meat-free for breakfast and lunch once a week, and quoted her reply: Its good for the environment, and its good for you yourself.
Elah is correct, and her response offers proof that not only do Meatless Mondays teach children about food, but also about the impact of their food choices. Every day, it seems, science shines more light on the alarming connection between animal agriculture and climate chaos: not only the production of greenhouse gas emissions, but also unsustainable water and land usage, and major loss of wildlife and biodiversity. Its high time future generations learn what they are up against, and what they can do about it. And dropping meat for two meals a week is a great place to start.

The indoctrination seems complete. Heads are truly full of mush. Thank you NEA and Marxists.
And if theyre dependent on the school lunch program?
It IS a big deal.
Oh, they’ll do meatless Mondays for enviro-whackoism. But if anyone suggested meatless Fridays for Catholicism, the left would go ballistic.
Which is why it is meatless Monday. They waste no opportunity to sock it to the religious folk.
When ya gonna learn something Wednesdays.
brown bag Monday!!
I remember a report where some bug-eating sycophants set up a "bugs are nutritious" festival in NYC last year. Needless to say, they had most, if not all of the public school age kids eating ants, grasshoppers, and crickets, with the emphasis on "the environment" and "saving the earth".
Fish on Fridays. Meatless Mondays. No pork products. No more school vending machines. And heaven forbid there’s any peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Why not just close down the lunch rooms altogether? It’d save money and provide more classroom space for all those illegals coming in.
Ours served that soy fake meat but swore they didn’t. I’d send our kids with lunch sacks but sometimes they’d forget them so ate the school lunch and got sick each and every time.
I always packed a lunch, meatloaf was good, bologna, or salami and cheese.
Of course, they just couldn’t make it Meatless Fridays now could they?
I would read Dean Ornishs book UNDO IT
His overall lifestyle prescription suggest been endorsed by the medical establishment and are being reimbursed by Medicare nowAfter a long long long battle with them
Bottom line freepers. Health is wealth
Going without meat for ONE day in a school week is NOT a big deal-——there are other sources of protein.
If these parents are so dependent on the school lunch program the kids probably don’t get much meat on non-school days.

.
Strange - because thats not what the leftists say when they demand expansions of the school lunch program to include breakfast, dinner and free summer meals to help their nutrition.
But now that takes a back seat to veganism.
“But now that takes a back seat to veganism.”

Sizzlind steak thursdays.
They want the children, the ones they didn’t kill at birth, to be healthy..cause the care about the children?
Not true..there is a lot of complaining.
What is missing is taking action.
Ask us Old people. We went to school and the school didn’t provide any lunch. They did go out on a limb and gave us a place to eat the peanut butter and jelly sandwich our mothers gave us for lunch.
Now, taxpayers provide lunch and no more peanut butter and jelly allowed.
Cradle to grave just means an early grave.
Glad to see you support your tax dollars being used to support socialist indoctrination.
