On Thursday, the San Geronimo B substation in the center of the country, which supplies electricity to four out of five Venezuelans from the massive Guri hydropower plant, went down.

No date has been set to restart the plant and most workers were told to stay home on Monday

...

Other experts, including Mr. Aguilar, said the magnitude of the blackout indicated the problem was caused by a major failure inside Guri’s turbines. A Corpoelec supervisor involved in dispatching Guri’s power said he was told by the plant’s managers on Thursday that the plant’s equipment was damaged.

...

Mr. Aguilar ... said the government has tried to restart Guri four times since the start of the blackout on Thursday.

If the Guri generators were damaged, they'll never get the power back on, at least as long as Maduro is in charge ...

This looks for all the world like the end game in "Atlas Shrugged"

I would not be surprised if we turned the lights off. We wanted a coup, this will get one.

No refrigeration or communication. Stone age life in a modern country. And still Maduro is king.

dampening hopes of imminent resolution to a devastating blackout that has brought the country to the verge of social implosion.

Funny, other countries experience blackouts from time to time and they aren't brought to "the verge of social implosion." I wonder why Venezuela is different. / sarc

Leave it to the NYT to write an entire article examining all the issues related to the blackout and not identify the prime cause: Socialism.

And neither do the non-socialists or they would have done something about it.

One powerplant for 75% of the country. What could go wrong?

We can safely assume that Maduro has electricity and lights.

Hi.

I have a solution to Venezuela’s problems.

Get Bernie, Occasional-Cortex, Glover, Sean Penn and others to go and relieve Maduro from power.

Then that cabal, in conjunction with Michael Moore, Soros and others, can make Venezuela great again. MVGA!

What caused the Guri failure? Corpoelec union leader Ali Briceño said it was brush fire under the 765 KV trunkline which caused a surge in the system and caused Guri to shut down. There are no skilled operators left there to restart it.

Most people I talked to say the problem had to occur inside Guri’s turbines themselves. And that’s a scary thought. If they are damaged, they will be very hard to replace or repair. No money or skilled people.

Is it me, or does Latino culture seem to love collectivism, socialism, envy and Caudillo culture?

In that case, there’s no fixing Venezuela.

Buddy, if 80% of the US was without power for 4 days it would be utter chaos.
