Just repealing the 16th and 17th amendment would turn us around.
Lots of stupid bills in Utah this year. A white college girl gets murdered by a big black sex offender/parolee she was dating and we need more anti-gun laws. And additional special protections for homosexuals and the homeless.

On the other hand, most clauses in our Constitution are ‘soft’ in nature, and comprise what James Madison referred to as mere parchment barriers. For instance, soft clauses are among the myriad that deal with regulation of commerce, taxation, free speech rights and the placement of all legislative powers in congress. These, the soft clauses, are disregarded, if not inverted, to serve purposes opposite of their clear intent.
On closer inspection, we’ll find that hard Constitutional clauses have an institution or an interest group to defend them. Otherwise, and without defense, they are sure to fall into the soft category.
To keep the entirety of our Constitution in force requires institutions designed for the continued defense of hard clauses and renewed defense of soft clauses.
For instance, the scotus’ infamous 1942 Wickard v. Filburn opinion regarding interstate commerce did enormous and continuing damage to state sovereignty. Despite the clear wording of the commerce clause and the Tenth Amendment, Wickard or a similar ruling was an eventual certainty since the states had not been in the senate to defend their interests since 1913. A senate of the states had previously ensured the commerce clause remained in the hard clause category.
The 17th Amendment doomed many previously hard clauses into soft clause irrelevance. There are other examples.
To the extent that the Second Amendment is intact is not due to its enumeration in the Bill of Rights. The 2A remains in force due to attentive citizen groups who stand ready to render electoral hell on politicians who waver on this fundamental right.
The leftist/socialists are experts at subverting the system. Look what they have done at destroying the Mainline churches.

Regarding balanced budgets, since US dollar is the reserve currency of the world, the US needs to supply liquidity, in USD, to the world. No USD liquidity, and world trade will suffer/halt.
Via Federal Reserve rules, the USD is loaned into existence. The USD is a “note” (Federal Reserve Note) - a debt instrument.
If the debt is paid off, and the budget is balanced, then there will be no USD anymore - crazy huh!
So under the existing system, the system will likely collapse when the national debt is paid off.
This means to me that if there is a balanced budget amendment, then the rules about how the USD is created need to be changed as well.
They keep encroaching on more and more of the hard clauses all the time. The new assault is on the Electoral College. They keep whittling away and there won’t be much left except for three branches of government.
Anti-Federalists argued the Constitution offered too many chances for abuse.
James Madison countered that the possibility of abuse of a necessary power was not sufficient reason to reject the power.
Also, to deny the sovereign people and states the opportunity to peacefully amend (repeal the 17th) THEIR Constitution denies the central tenet of our Declaration, and guarantees future violent settlement of problems.
This always reminds me of Ronnie James Dio in the song “Heaven and Hell” where he says “FOOL! FOOL!”
Because these people are all fools if they think that this would work out well in a time of Progressives, Socialism, Lawlessness, Rino’s, Godlessness, And on and on. A corrupt generation cannot improve on the work of one that was far less corrupt.
Looking forward to that new constitution with no Second Amendment, severe limits on the First Amendment, Health Care as a right, and then the other treats. You have to be out of your mind to think this would be an improvement. There are no Jefferson’s Madison’s or Adams anywhere to be seen in this process. This new Constitution that a group of states makes today will make the tax code blush out of its simplicity.
How about a ConCon to set term limits?
How about a ConCon to forbid former members of Congress becoming lobbyists?
How about a ConCon to make illegal immigration illegal?
How about a ConCon to make sanctuary cities and states illegal?
How about a ConCon to reword the 14th amendment to say children of illegal aliens born in the USA are not citizens
How about a ConCon to declare voter harvesting illegal?

Democrats everywhere are cheering too ... because they know they will control the Convention while erstwhile conservatives are busy with jobs and other things ... just like conservatives were too busy to bother with education practices, giving lefties control of the educational process which is now churning out graduates in socialism, global warming, marijuana growing, social justice, gender studies, and other worthless educational pursuits, but are all good Democrat voters - which is of course the ultimate point.
So the Convention will end up in the same kettle, while conservative whine, moan and groan, finally going along to get along.
Worst Idea ever.
Repeal the 17th is all that will be required to fix things.
Perhaps an Amendment restricting campaign financing for any elected office to those that actually are permanently residing in the district.
There is no reason to believe this convention will do anything but cause trouble.
Let’s see if I have got this right: Left controls convention because it is well-funded, organized and determined, Right gets screwed because it is none of those things?

It was in response to Shays Rebellion, which shook the US to its foundation.
