The guy who was trying to smuggle the turtles was sticking his neck out.
You might not be too far off. Y’know how everything in Chinese cuisine has some sort of magic property? I was searching for something a few years ago and ran across a page where some Chinese chefs were talking about rich clients that were bringing them endangered magic turtles to make a dish that promotes longevity. The clients had paid huge amounts of money to aquire the magic turtles and had paid the chefs a good sum to illegally prepare it and keep their mouths shut. They dodnt do a good job of either. They were bragging about reselling the magic turtles to increase their profits even more while replacing the magic turtles with more common ones, in one story he replaced the magic turtle with a not very fresh roadkill.
There is a great deal of trade between China and the Philippines in slaves/arms/drugs/human body parts, why not magic turtles?
