A state employee complained that the wife of embattled Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam reportedly handed the students cotton and asked them “if they could imagine what it must have been like to pick cotton all day.”

Leah Dozier Walker, an official in the state Department of Education, said that the incident demonstrates that the Northams have not learned from past actions.

Are there not still Cotton Fields needing to be picked by someone/something?

Field experiences are likely still available.

The important thing is that no one including Fauxnews is covering Trump’s meeting with N. Korea.

So what?

Is she supposed to hand them a model plane and ask them to imagine they invented flight? Or a lightbulb and imagine they invented electricity?

I can. I used to pick cotton as a child all day out in the hot Arizona sun, dragging a bag that was way bigger than I was. BTW I’m a red headed Celt so I don’t think only slaves picked cotton.

Not a thing wrong with this. Anyone who’s ever handled a Cotton Bowl for the first time will remark on being surprised on how sharp the edges are. It’s a good educational thing, and kids should understand what they were doing.

My wife and I just got back from vacation where we took the tour of Ft. Sumter, it was wonderful. The Park Ranger gave a very moving speech, about 8 min long in which he asked the group to put themselves in the shoes of the soldiers building and defending the fort, the slaves forced to build the structure, the land owners in Charleston who know that war would upset the status quo, it was quite moving. In just eight minutes this humble Park Ranger told us about the thickness of the forts walls, the size of the guns, but offered perspective on why people can’t talk or sympathize with each other any more.

I don’t really care about the pictures in Northam’s yearbook either, but it’s really dumb for the wife of a politician who was already under attack. This might make it harder for the Dems to hold VA in 2020.

I’m sure Ralph and the wife get a tingly feeling when they see a cross burning! Wow, what a mess!

Liberals are so sensitive over nothing these days. So stupid. Then there's all this stuff about black history month, and celebrating a few blacks. What about all the white and asian folks who, well, created practically everything? Crickets. Rather than dwelling on the past, liberals should get blacks off their butts to do creative things that other races have been doing all along. Sorry if I triggered any liberals out there, but so what.

As long as did this for all the kids, as opposed to doing it only for the Black kids, it's a good way to show kids the evil of slavery. Of course it's also very un-PC, so she will be slammed.

In the early 70’s while in junior high I worked in the sugar beet fields. I believe we got a buck, buck and a half, per row to chop the block and hoe the weeds. We met at the school, the school librarian drove the bus to the fields and we worked for various farmers.

You could never do that now.
