Prosecutors say an elderly man was assaulted inside a New Jersey supermarket after he was confronted over a “Make America Great Again” hat he was wearing.
Somerset County Prosecutor Michael Robertson says the 81-year-old Franklin Township man was shopping at the Shop Rite on Elizabeth Avenue Monday afternoon when he was approached regarding his red cap.
The victim was assaulted and sustained minor injuries, according to prosecutors. He declined medical attention at the scene.
No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Hate is a motive, not the crime.
The media ignores real hate crimes against Trump supporters.
Actually, I would not write those words in social media, and any good attorney would likely tell you the same. If you do use deadly force, you can be guaranteed someone will comb your social media posts to find your state of mind. Even if there are no criminal charges, I imagine someone could file a civil suit while claiming you were looking for trouble.
Gun owners need to be extra careful in public forums.

Same here. It’s so frustrating to read all these reports of conservative Trump supporters being attacked. Just once I’d like to read that one of these conservatives fought back...two black eyes, teeth knocked out and bloody nose!
I swear that’s what I’d do. Problem is I’m in a conservative state filled with Trump supporters. That kind of stuff almost never happens around here.
My son works for Shop Rite. They have more security cameras inside and outside their stores than Fort Knox. If the assailant at checkout used a credit/debit card or his Shop Rite Price Plus Card he should have been caught already. Of course he could have just fled the store after the assault or was not local to that area
Franklin Township... mixed but mostly a ghetto democrat area. I drive a bus in the area every day.
