Rep. Maxine Waters feels sorry for broke millennials.

In fact, the California representative seemed to go so far as to apologize to the younger generation for their economic situation during a speech Friday.

“Millennials say, ‘We have done everything you told us to do, only to find out we can’t get a job. And when we get a job it’s not worth going to work every day because of the pay that is offered to us,’” she told the audience at the Rainbow Coalition Wall Street Project Economic Summit at the Sheraton Hotel in Midtown.

Democrat Waters — who has famously clashed with President Trump — added, “[Millennials say,] ‘We are disappointed in what we thought would be available to us when we came of age, when we graduate and we are ready to start our careers.’”

...and valuable degrees in growing, high-paying fields will get you lots of high salary offers.

But, no! It’s whitey’s fault somehow.

"...learn what you actually do for your job!"

Exactly right. I remember my Fluids professor Wollersheim telling us in our Senior Spring that "You'll probably never use anything we've taught you. The most important thing we've taught you is 'how to THINK about solving any problem.'" That turned out to be very true. You learn what's required on every job and train yourself every day on how to do it. The learning never stops.

I think I see the problem.

That statement, and your response, are deep thinking statements. What a difference from depression-era folks who gladly took any jobs. Millennials are so spoiled. I started out with minimum-pay wages but was happy to work, and bettered myself to a comfortable living. But I wasn't surrounded by socialists.

My two millennials are having no problems finding jobs. Of course both have 4 years of post graduate education. One is a pastor and the other a physician. Funny how a little determination and the right degrees pay off .

If she feels that bad about it, then maybe she should support President Trump in his efforts to bring the outsourced jobs back, so that they can find decent jobs.

I uses the idea of working your way up in an institution through hard work isn't on the menu for millennials. They deserve top pay right from the start for just being themselves. They all got trophies after all.

Welcome to Globalism! Why should we pay you big bucks when we can have somebody in China do the same thing for a lot less $$$.

I think a big part of the issue is the whole ‘everybody can go to college’ idea. So all these kids have a bunch of debt, most don’t learn much practical stuff (esp the idiot degrees), and a college degree is associated with a well-paying job. So between those expectations and the debt, a $35M or $40M yearly salary isn’t enough. They think they’re worth more, with no experience. And kids these days are all about instant gratification. Online media, Amazon Prime, they’re spoiled and don’t know what it means to work and build something. Many can’t even do basic home maintenance. They didn’t spend weeks building a dam in the creek as a kid.

I don’t remember where it is, but there was an article I saw about job time. Most younger people are fine swapping jobs every couple years. There’s no idea of career, of long-term employment like there is with the older generations. And that affects how you work and what you do.

PoF, the issue with learning on the job is so many kids think they know so much coming in. And basic orientation can only teach so much. And many employers don’t want to spend tons of $$ in more advanced training, due to point two above. Why spend a year+ of salary to train someone, when they’ll be leaving soon?

My sister teaches math to middle school kids in inner city Baltimore. It’s a mix of inner city kids whose parents are looking for a good education to lift their kids out of the ghetto and rural poor white kids. They inculcate every single kid with “You are going to college.” At best, 20% of the kids are really college-capable, yet they persist with the myth that they are all going. A high percentage do go, but they either fail or have the curriculum and majors dumbed down for them.

Yup. And it's really unfortunate, because many of these kids could make a good life going into trade school for plumbing or electrician or mechanic, or by just working construction or something out of HS. Many people should NOT go to college, and instead have a productive life at a 'less prestigious' job, with zero student debt. Hell, many of the professional trades will pay for your training, and maybe even pay you during training!
