Patrick Caddell, the political pollster who helped send an obscure peanut farmer named Jimmy Carter to the White House, later became disillusioned with fellow Democrats and finally veered right to advise supporters of Donald J. Trump, died on Saturday in Charleston, S.C. He was 68.
His death, from complications of a stroke, was confirmed by a colleague, Prof. Kendra Stewart of the College of Charleston.
While Mr. Caddell was considered instrumental in Mr. Carters victory in 1976, he also shared the blame for limiting him to a single term. He helped persuade the president to deliver a speech that was intended to inspirit the nation during an energy crisis and economic slump, but instead tarred Mr. Carter as a weakling who was unable to lift the country out of its malaise.
Instead, in 1980 voters chose Ronald Reagan, a Republican who promised a rosier vision that he would describe during his successful re-election campaign as morning again in America.

I enjoyed his commentary.
RIP, tell Zell up there with you we said Hi.
I did too. He always seemed level-headed and honest. RIP
Good post.
One of the few decent democrats.
Not too many left after him.
That's a Socialist who is not a Jihadist (yet).
RIP
Always enjoyed his commentary.
An intellectually honest liberal. They are truly dying off.
I’m gonna miss Pat ...
good man. i hope and pray he made it to Heaven with my dad and his blue-collar, conservative democrat brothers. i think God granted him a measure of grace, allowing him to support and see God’s election of Trump as a partial atonement for carter’s great failure to working class democrats.
A conservative Democrat is like a moderate in Iran.
Died too soon of a stroke, I understand. RIP Pat!
Last of a dying breed.
[singing] this is number six and Carter’s still a ****...

There is another Democrat pollster/ commentator I still like.
He was often seen on Fox when I used to watch it.
Can’t recall his first name, but last name is Schoen.
Seems like a very reasonable chap.
There are probably younger versions of him now, active in the other parties, but they keep their true sentiments quiet.
Then, you have someone who goes the other way.
Someone like S.E. Cupp. I used to think of her as conservative at one time. Not so much anymore.
She’s been palling around with her new Blue friends.
have no idea what you could possibly mean. most of my family wouldn’t have known iran existed until carter failed miserably there. it started the process of making many of us Reagan democrats.
oh I am sorry to hear of this news.
whenever he was on Hannity, I listened intently as I thought him to be pretty level headed and honest. One of those, “the party left me” type of people. I respected and took his viewpoints into deep consideration.
RIP sir.
Pat Caddell and Zell Miller.... the last honest Dem’s.
R.I.P.
A great one. Terrific fellow. Rest in peace, sir.
