Patrick Caddell, the political pollster who helped send an obscure peanut farmer named Jimmy Carter to the White House, later became disillusioned with fellow Democrats and finally veered to advise supporters of Donald J. Trump, died on Saturday in Charleston, S.C. He was 68.
His death, from complications of a stroke, was confirmed by a colleague, Prof. Kendra Stewart of the College of Charleston.
While Mr. Caddell was considered instrumental in Mr. Carters victory, he also shared the blame for limiting him to a single term. He helped persuade the president to deliver a speech that was intended to inspirit the nation during an energy crisis and economic slump, but instead tarred Mr. Carter as a weakling who was unable to lift the country out of its malaise.
Instead, in 1980 voters chose Ronald Reagan, a Republican who promised a rosier vision that he would describe during his successful re-election campaign as morning again in America.

My Mom was a Bill Clinton kind of Democrat, he was Dem she ever voted for..she doesn’t recognize the Dem party anymore so has voted Republican ever since. with Caddell, even though he was a liberal, he was one of the few “Honest” liberals that existed, that you could have a conversation with, even though we disagreed on the issues, and still shake hands at the end of the conversation kind of person. A damn shame, a stroke, just horrible
Thinking maybe Pat shaved some off his age. Hell, I thought he was 65 10 years ago. RIP Pat.
Agree!
Oh no!!! I loved his political analysis on Fox and talk radio.
Pat Caddell might have called himself a democrat. He certainly once was. But for almost 40 years he was no more a democrat than Jennifer Rubin is a Republican.
Reminds me of Tim Russert’s death. We lost a good one from their side.
Totally agree. I missed seeing him on TV and had wondered why. God bless you, and thank you for your courage to be true to yourself and sharing that with us.
A democrat with integrity and honesty, a rare combination. RIP Mr. Caddell.
He was a likeable Democrat, a rare breed indeed.
Fishy or not?
Sorry to hear this. He was one of the last reasonable Democrats. Rest in Peace, and prayers to comfort his family.
Noooo! I loved him! He talked sense. He was an honest man. I had missed him being on TV for a long time and I was so afraid he was ill. RIP to an honorable man.
RIP... He was one of the good guys. A democrat but an honest man.
Reminds me of Tim Russerts death. We lost a good one from their side.

Hmm. Yes. You’re right.
RIP, Pat.
RIP. One of the few Democrat talking heads I respected.
So true. Sorry to see him gone, especially in these times with the idiocy being displayed by many
Father God, receive Thy servant Patrick.
RIP, DripLip. The only honest Democrat (I nicknamed him DripLip because his beard looked like he dribbled milk down one corner of it.
Caddell was about the only Democrat willing to criticize Clinton for his adultery-esque behavior. Him and Holy Joe Lieberman.
Wow - his last tweet was January 2016 - had he been ill that long?
Llosa to us more then the Libs
Yes, he was an honest and decent man. Said what he believed in his latter years, even when it made things much harder for him.
