I always thought that was strange, “misdemeanor” means minor crime, so a serious misdemeanor is sort of a contradiction. Felonies should be reserved for serious crimes, etc.

I think there is something cultural in NJ (going back to the Dutch settlements) about alcohol; while other states think we should tighten our laws, politicians here are focusing on reducing the impact of license suspensions so that those found guilty of drunk driving can still drive to work (with breathalyzers on their cars).
