From where Violeta Monterroso stood, in a migrant encampment near one of Tijuanas main border crossings, she could almost see San Diego, the shimmering American city just beyond the frontier fence. She could see American cars as they slid down a highway and disappeared toward a ghostly skyline, and she could imagine what lay almost within reach. But that promised land was also infinitely distant. From the Mexican side of the border, mired in inches of mud that reeked of broken portable toilets, the entire U.S. might as well have been a mirage.
When Monterroso and her husband Cándido Calderón arrived in late November with their children, Kenia Jasmin, 12; Isaac, 11; and Yeimi, 9, they added their names to the bottom of a list in a thick book. There were more than 5,000 migrants ahead of them waiting to request asylum in the U.S., and because of recent changes in policy, American authorities were processing only 40 to 100 requests a day. Monterroso and Calderón expected it would take months before their names were called.

But the situation on the southern border, however the political battle in Washington plays out, will continue to frustrate this U.S. President, and likely his successors too, and not just because of continuing caravans making their way to the desert southwest. Months of reporting by TIME correspondents around the world reveal a stubborn reality: we are living today in a global society increasingly roiled by challenges that can be neither defined nor contained by physical barriers. That goes for climate change, terrorism, pandemics, nascent technologies and cyber-attacks. It also applies to one of the most significant global developments of the past quarter-century: the unprecedented explosion of global migration.

Yes, there are people who believe that not only should the "global migration" continue, but believe it cannot be stopped.
Which is nonsense.
There have been "global migrations" throughout human history. Some have succeeded (Goths, Vandals, Mongols) and many have failed in fire and brimstone.
We are stepping into the zero sum, win or lose phase of the game. The most skilled and most ruthless will prevail.
They believe in unicorns and fairies too.
Why can’t the ‘Rat Socialists just go fix Mexico and its Southern Neighbors?
Awwwwwww!
Risking everything? Really? It seems to me that they simply stepped into Mexico whereupon the Mexicans promptly fed them, sheltered them and transported them. Real pioneer stock there. /sarc
A lot of criminals risk everything for a better life. That does not excuse crime.
So, how much of that “better life” is supposed to be taxpayer subsidized?
The want the better life that previous legal immigrants (going way back to the 1600’s) that developed America as it is now and they just want to saunter in and ‘grab’ the hopes and dreams that we created; the media falls over themselves calling them Dreamers. Right. They dream on cashing in, do no want to assimilate, demand we speak their language by having signs in their language all over the place; but I digress.
Everyone cannot come here that wants to, we will turn into North Mexico.
Paging the BooHoo girl!
Would the BooHoo girl please pick up the white courtesy phone!
Bank Robbers risk going to Prison for a better life.
Mexican Grapes of Wrath.
There was a time when Time was an American magazine and not this global trash agenda driven rag.

Hey - how about this revolutionary idea - spend the money, time, and effort breaking law after law, and instead - be the “agents for change in your OWN country!!!
Think about it - 10K people protest in front of the Honduran capitol building... or same in Guatemala... But no - its much “easier” to just break through Mexico and try to enter the US where everything is FREE FREE FREE!!!!
Maybe they should risk staying home. After all, running away to inflict your poverty and ignorance on another country isn’t exactly a profile in courage.
My parents are just one of millions, including those from south of our border, that followed the rules and laws immigrating to America. Now we are told by Democrats and Socialists(but I digress) that we must not only allow these people to ignore our laws and sovereignty as well as leap frogging over those immigrating the legal way, plus we must heap upon them a largess of cash, food, lodging and healthcare denied to our own American citizens.
I really don't care squat about their tear jerking stories, let their own country take care of them and if it won't they should rise up and fix it. While we have Veterans living homeless lacking proper healthcare, clothing and food, while we have our own citizens in need we should not now or ever allow unrestricted migration across any of our borders.........unless it is for these people to go home!
This is another reason why the irresponsibility of automatic citizenship at birth must be addressed.
Credit Union robbers too.
