I prefer State of the Union speeches without the props.

It was probably even better when it was a written letter to Congress.

I prefer State of the Union speeches without the speeches. Let the President send a written report to Congress which can be distributed without spin to the American public using whitehouse.gov.

And I'd feel the same no matter who or what party is clinging to the Oval Office at the time!

You must have hated Reagan’s SOTUs then.

The SOTU ‘speech’ was created as a gimmick for newspapers to hype the Wilson era. In 1923, it proceeded on as a radio gimmick for pumping up the Presidency. Over the past decade, we’ve reached the next stage....props as guests.

The whole thing....maybe a decade ago...started to remind me of a WWE-wrestling event. There’s little to get out of this, and you’d be better off going down to the local pub or joining some friends for a bowling game.
