Serbia's Wave of Protests Enter 9th Week

Tens of thousands of people have been gathering every weekend to march against what they call the climate of “political violence” in Serbia created under the rule of President Aleksandar Vucic and his governing Serbian Progressive Party.

The so-called “1 of 5 million” protests started on December 8, 2018. They were triggered by an incident a few weeks earlier on November 23, when an opposition politician, Borko Stefanovic, was attacked and beaten in the southern town of Krusevac.

Initially, the protests were held only in Belgrade. But in January, people in more than 30 Serbian cities and towns joined in with their own protests.

About 20 cities and towns have announced they will hold rallies in February, according to the organizers.

The key demands are measures to stop suspected abuse of the electoral roll and public resources in election campaigns, better control of the election process and campaigns – and criminal sanctions against those that abuse the campaigns.

Other demands are for protest representatives to get five minutes on the main news show of the public broadcaster, RTS, and the more regular presence of opposition politicians on RTS.

They also demand an investigation into the attempted murder of Serbian website Zig Info journalist Milan Jovanovic whose home was torched in the Belgrade suburb of Vrcin on December 12.

Because Serbs are BAD PEOPLE, all of them, at least as far as the media is concerned. That’s why Clinton bombed the crap out of their civilians, and no one cared.

Thanks for posting this, and the Russian one too.
I’ve heard of none of this.

Because the vast majority of Serbs are orthodox Christians.

Its a conservative populist party that’s pro-EU.

Now it stands accused of the same ruling mentality as the Socialists, the successors to the Yugoslav Communists.

Strange, the interest that I am picking up and watching 100 years later analysis of the Great War. That little country drew the entire globe into conflict. I scoured the internet to find out WHY so much hostility over centuries against the Serbs. Great to have internet and have real people reporter real happenings, can’t trust the giant news organizations to be accurate, only giving their spin and trying to shape our minds.

Austria was a super power and known as the Austrian-Hungarian empire. They were Catholic and Serbs were Orthodox. Serbs were weak and minor compared to Austria. In my book it was a religious dispute plus cultural in that Austria was more refined with lots of high culture compared with Serbia.

The Western project to destabilize the Balkans continues apace.

As if NATO bombing wasn’t enough.

Both sets of my maternal grandparents left the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1914.

I don’t know what future the Empire had to offer, but I do know that mining coal in Colorado looked like a step up!

This protest is made for a Western audience. The sign is in Latin letters, not Cyrillic.

Same language they use Latin alphabet in Croatia and Cyrillic in Serbia.

Good for them. Many Germans immigrated to Colorado so your grandparents coming from Austria-Hungary was close enough. Germanic enough.

Serba mainly use Cyrilic, but Latin is also used, albeit to a lesser degree.
