Nearly 4,000 additional U.S. troops will be deployed to the southern border to assist Customs and Border Protection, the Pentagon announced Sunday.
CNN reported that 3,750 troops will head to the border for 90 days to aid in placing razor wire along the border, as well as with mobile surveillance operations. The deployment will bring the number of active-duty forces in the area to roughly 4,350.
Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said last week that the department would send "several thousand" additional troops to the border, but declined to be more specific.
The Hill has reached out to the Pentagon for comment.

Beautiful.
Not needed for this mission.
The 50 cal. on the Humvees are more than sufficient to deal with massed Cartel forces.
South Korea has deployed Samsung SGR-1 armed robot sentries along the DMZ. They can identify targets up to two miles away.
True. Thank you!
Yeah, the CBP is now kept busy taking invaders to the hospital while the cartels walk right on.
Has rush or anybody been talking about this? This is the SOLUTION!!!
10 US CODE 284!!!!!!
Well armed and well supplied, I hope. But especially well armed.
How did CNN Know?
“Are these troops allowed to shoot? Or are they to be deployed feeding and diapering the offspring of the illegal criminal invaders”
They can only shoot in self defense. Under the Posse Comitatus law, the Military stays out of domestic law enforcement, and there is no declared Military conflict.
Mostly what the Military will be doing, is providing logistic support to Border Patrol, to free up their officers, who can legally arrest crossers. They will provide aviation and truck support for transportation, medical aid stations, and such. Some of that is surge capability to shift enough folks to where the caravans choose to hit the border.
There were two other significant missions specified by SecDef Shanahan: Installing 150 miles of concertina, and conducting mobile surveillance/reconnaissance. Apparently, they have some interesting new surveillance capability to contribute.
No, there wont be any shooting, unless there is an all out armed attack. From the swarm. That aint happening. Rocks maybe.
“Build new military bases along the border.”
Border Patrol has issued a contract for 2,000, up to 3,000 rapidly deployable (pop up kit) buildings (18’x 18’). They can be hauled to a site like a shipping container, be positioned with a crane or forklift/wretch, and set up within hours. Other trucks could drop trailers with fresh water, generators and fuel. The winning vendor has subcontracted with Rhino Hide in Idaho to provide bullet resistant wall filling.
Those type of buildings seem to be for establishing an enduring presence in remote, undeveloped areas. I expect they plan to establish a series of small bases, and/or observation/surveillance stations. I’d guess they want to have a response capability if they detect incursions, so I lean to small base option, with a dozen or more officers per crew.
So it seems that Border Patrol plans to ramp up for that mission. I would guess that we will see it next year, but its very possible that the first few might be this year.
If a military base was established along the entire Southern Border, one-quarter mile wide, 2000 miles long, that would be 400 square miles, which is 256,000 acres. Joint Base Lewis-McChord in WA is 414,000 acres and Fort Hood in Texas is 214,000 acres.
As a military base, it would have a guarded perimeter and any unauthorized persons breaching the perimeter could be arrested and kept in military jails pending Adjudication. Enemy combatants could be sent to Gitmo. Asylum seekers could be processed in Immigration Courts, established as large tents every 5 miles along the entire length of the Base, a total of 400 Courts until the backlog is stabilized. Genuine Claimants would be processed into The States, others deported.
The Base might be called Joint Base Alamo.
“Are these troops allowed to shoot? “ Probably warning shots over their heads, but who says how high over the heads of the invading horde? Has the angle been specified?
Now that is some original thinking, I’m impressed.
Not to mention, drug possession on a federal installation is a federal offense. Throw the book at traffickers.
