New York (CNN Business)Layoffs for about 4,000 salaried staff at General Motors are due to start Monday.
The layoffs are part of a 15% reduction in white collar jobs in North America that the automaker first announced back in November. At the same time, it announced plans to close four US plants as well as a fifth in Canada.
While those plants, which include about 6,000 hourly jobs, have yet to close, GM is moving ahead with the salaried staff reductions, a GM spokesman confirmed Friday. The timing of the layoffs was first reported by the Detroit News.
The company had about 2,300 salaried staff accept voluntary buyout packages that were offered to 18,000 employees. In addition, there were 1,500 contract employees who were not retained by the company.
GM workers will have job options -- but they may not be as good
That leaves the remainder of the 8,000 planned job cuts to be accomplished with the involuntary layoffs.

I used to love GM. Now, GM is dead to me.
I wouldnt be shocked at all if the soul reason theyre doing this is to hurt Trump.
Well, we know the media will spin the layoffs as a negative on the President because no one lost a job anywhere in America for eight years while Bathhouse Barry was picking his toes and watching ESPN all day.
If they move production outside the U.S. hit ‘em hard with tariffs! These plant closings by Government motors seems politically motivated. The economy is doing very well.
Same here, after they went PC and queer.
I wish I could find a good substitute for my 1 ton Duramax. It’s my work truck and I’m in northern Alberta and Dodge and Ford are both garbage. All my colleges that run those have major issues and I’m at 200,000 kms and still going strong. The other guys get inferior transmissions, motors, and mileage. I get better mileage deleted than an electric/hybrid toyota camry.
Those laid off need to learn how to code.
“I wish I could find a good substitute for my 1 ton Duramax.”
If it’s the best fit, buy it!
My experience involves a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville that would break in my driveway. The car drove and rode really nice, but it always had some stupid thing breaking.
Then came the bailout, GM took our money, and screwed Impala owners. Something along the lines of, “That was the old GM that built that, we don’t stand behind that.”
Now, they’re moving manufacturing overseas. Foreign manufacturers can assemble their cars here, but GM can’t?!
I do admit a fondness for the Corvette, and I’d consider buying one of those. But when it comes to an everyday car, I drive a 2018 Hyundai Sonata, and I’m more than happy with it. In fact, Hyundai gave me $500 off for being a veteran. Guess what GM would give me for that? Yep, zero.
I’d buy a Hyundai car, they seem to make some decent ones. It’s just I need a big, mean truck for what I do. It’s also silly they are trying to stop us from deleting that DEF system from our trucks. It freezes at -11 or so. Howdy, this is northern Alberta. I know lots of guys who’s trucks go into limp mode and then they can’t work. I’ve always been able to roll. My truck is a 2015 though, and I’ll need to replace at some point before too much longer.
I used to only buy GM. I had issues with my last truck I bought from them - went through hub assemblies and alternators like some people go through underwear.
Then they went full 0bamatard.
No thanks.
My local dealer used to send me advertisements - they pulled me off their list after I responded with what I thought of GM..........
My UK plant manager who is here for a few years just bought a quad cab F150. Looks sharp.
I said I’d challengender him to an offroad race if I got my vintage K5 put back together in time.
I can’t roll with a 1/2 ton, needs to be 3/4 ton at least heh.
304,000 new Jobs were added in January.
The 4,000 Laid Off Employees should be able to find new Jobs in no time.
I wonder what their Severance Packages look like?
GM Trucks are assembled in Mexico.
A rat entitlement, no money to bail us out we lay off
I asked if he would try to take it back to the UK.
He said no way for a lot of reasons. I mentioned MOT.
Every time I think I might want to give GM another chance, they give me a reason to keep away from their dealerships. And that stinks, because I really like the Malibu and Colorado.
My company may be whacking some more of us if sales of certain products don’t pick up again. I know only part of the story.
Whether there is money for severance is another question.
At least I can I was second in command of the company’s US MIS department for a while.
