Florida Gov. DeSantis signs executive order scrapping Common Core

In another reversal of former Florida Gov. Rick Scott's policies, Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered an end to Common Core-type educational standards in the state.

DeSantis’ executive order directs Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran to develop a road map for a new way to educate the Sunshine State’s students.

Florida moved to a Common Core-type system under Scott, a change aimed at matching standards for other students in the U.S.

State leaders made some tweaks to Common Core, and re-branded it as ‘Florida Standards’ but they remain very similar to Common Core.

State governors - not the federal government - developed Common Core and former Gov. Jeb Bush did everything he could to sell it as "fewer, higher expectations, critical thinking skills, benchmarked to the best in the world."

Critics of Common Core, including Tea Party groups, said it would take away local control and dumb down schools. Meanwhile, many parents had trouble understanding some of the teaching methods and found the curriculum confusing, particularly some of the math lessons.

“One of the things we would constantly hear about on the campaign trail was a lot of frustration from parents in particular with this idea of Common Core," DeSantis said. "When you complained ... I heard you. I told you I'd do something about it. And today we are acting to bring promises to reality."

Free at last! That was the latest stupid but expensive boondoggle foisted on the know-nothing administrators in our schools. Now maybe we can go back to students memorizing the multiplication table instead of drawing pictures to figure out 7X9.

DeSantis rocks. Google the 3 young conservatives he just put on the Florida Supreme Court for literally the next 35 years. He also sent a bad ass to Broward County as the new elections supervisor to stop the corruption.

In Texas, under Rick Perry, we never adopted Common Core, so there, TEXAS IS GREAT!!!

(I won’t bother mentioning that we let the public school establishment impose virtually the same thing as Common Core, while we were looking the other way)

From what I had heard about it, I thought there were a lot of good things about Common Core math. For instance it encouraged students to understand what was going on in solving certain kinds of problems rather than just blindly following a recipe. I have multiple degrees in math.

As for the multiplication table, of course ultimately students need to know it cold, without having to think. But it doesn't hurt to also understand it in more depth by drawing some pictures. Students do also need to learn to think and not just memorize.

If you were a student in the LA Public school system, they automatically pass you and hand over your diploma.

Suggestion: Develop a road map for an old way to educate the Sunshine State’s students.

That's ridiculous! I work with LA graduates and... ummm, ... Well, maybe you are right.

A start, maybe more states will do this as well. Problem is it will take a dozen years to affect a change like this.

Nice. Kill it and prosecute its authors for crimes against humanity...

The math agenda was creative — which I appreciated in a sick way — but it was ultimately destructive in its disregard of the critical foundation that built our technical world.
