I would like to know the actual temperature as well. Wind chill means nothing to me since I’m not prone to standing in direct wind in sub-zero weather.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I spent my life working outside. A really cold day with no wind is one thing. Add some wind to it and it gets nasty real fast.
I worked outside many days in 40 below windchill. I don’t want to do it again. Old bones don’t take it as well.
With an article title that alarming, frightening, it’s best we all just kill ourselves....
The "genius" of the House stated the Earth will be destroyed in 12 years anyway. So I'm just going to wait it out.
I'm sure you remember this one:
The Freezer Bowl was the 1981 American Football Conference (AFC) Championship Game between the San Diego Chargers and the Cincinnati Bengals. The game, won by the Bengals, 27–7, was played in the coldest temperature in NFL history in terms of wind chill. (The coldest in terms of air temperature was the Ice Bowl.) Air temperature was −9 °F (−22.8 °C), but the wind chill, factoring in a sustained wind of 27 miles per hour (43 km/h), was −37 °F or −38.3 °C (calculated as −59 °F or −50.6 °C using the now outdated wind chill formula in place at the time).
Meh. When I was growing up in the 60s - 70s, it was normal to get a few days like this every winter. The cold war was on, and back then they called these cold snaps ‘Siberian cold fronts’. It’s been a long time, but not surprised. I worry about busted water pipes the most.
I'm just south of Cleveland. We're scheduled for the brutal cold from Tuesday PM through Friday. Add to that, this past week has been mostly hideous.
On a positive note, there's plenty of warning and a few days have been okay to get to the store. I just hope that businesses and schools let people stay home on the brutal days.
Yes I remember the freezer bowl in Cincinnati.
I do wonder if they would allow games to be played in such bitter cold today. I don’t know if the NFL has official rules on weather, or if all such issues would be considered case by case. I know some NFL games have been delayed due to thunderstorms , but don’t know if cold has ever delayed any game.
Or they’d move it to a dome stadium or other warm weather city.
What’s funny, is the week before, the Chargers played in Miami, where the temperature was 76 degrees.
Excellent...though a bit conservative on the Lions.
I remember cross country skiing in Minnesota at -20 with no wind. Even bundled up and working hard on the skies we could only stay out for around an hour. With any wind at all...forget it.
Winter. Looks like Punxsutawney Phil could possibly freeze his ‘nads off and become the transgendered Punxsutawney Phyllis.
“Cows in Michigan complain about farmers with cold hands.”
That’s udderly ridiculous.
[[”potentially record breaking push” of Arctic air will inundate the Northern Plains and Great Lakes by Wednesday, bringing wind chills as low as -40 degrees in many locations]]
Cripes- i fished on a lake all day long in -40 degree wind chill weather back in the 80’s- used to work outside wind howling at -30 all day- (course we’d break 2 hours or so for 10 minutes to get the chill out via kerosene salamander but still-)
Record breaking? Yeah ok-
I saw this movie. The flag freezes on the flag pole. And they have to burn books in the fireplace.
It's been a long time since the 'weatherman' was concerned about 'mild' reporting. When I was a kid in the 1950s, weather was weather and you dealt with it.
Now it's a competition to see which tv personality can add the most drama to whatever weather we are having.
