Senate blocks White House-backed bill to end shutdown [fails 50-47]

Senate Democrats blocked a White House backed-plan to end the 34-day partial shutdown, turning it down in a 51-47 vote on Thursday.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) joined with Republicans to advance the measure, but it fell short of the 60 votes needed to defeat a filibuster.

In an unexpected development, Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) voted against Trump's plan. Lee is considered a fiscal hawk and Cotton is one of the Senate’s most conservative members on immigration.

The Senate is expected to hold a second vote Thursday on a continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the quarter of the government currently closed until Feb. 8. That bill is also expected to fail, though a few Republicans have said they will support it.

[Nancy Pelosi is demanding that every American keep their Front Doors unlocked and open or she will continue the Federal Government Partial Shutdown.]

That should be the headline all across America.

We’ve had over 30 days of this shutdown. It’s time to layoff all the needless teat drainers and save a trillion.

Last night the corrupt fake news was worried about a "brain drain" of all the valuable government workers going into the private sector. I laughed uproariously.

“Dems could get them back to work in a NY minute for a measly 5 billion dollar wall,”

That’s the wedge he’s driving right through their heart like a stake.

Sorry for a stupid question, but who exactly can refuse to bring it to a floor vote in the House?

It is very good to hear that we will be voting on a solution to end the government shutdown and secure the border this week. I look forward to reading the legislation and being able to offer amendments if they are needed.— Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) January 19, 2019

Nevertrumper Mike Lee, Nooooo to securing the border!!!

McConnell should be playing Harry Reid’s tune and “going nuclear” (ending filibusters with just a simple majority).

Why? The historical purposes of the 60 votes needed have been trashed by the total obstructionism on nearly every contentious measure at every turn, by Dims and GOPers. Why? The national divisions have been increased and heightened to levels where “bipartisan” has an effective meaning only when the majority can get what they want without the minority & a few minority sign on to a measure anyway.

The nation is divided as not seen since the civil war, Mr McConnell. Quit letting rules that can be changed stand in the way of you and your majority getting things done. You will regret it, as surely that is what any future Dim Senate majority is going to do - they admit how divided the nation is and no there is no other way to get what they want to do, when they have a majority; just as Harry Reid did when he last had control of the Senate.

Trump’s waiting for something before he makes his move. I’m not sure exactly what it is. One possibility is that he’s waiting for RGB’s retirement or death to be announced. Why would that matter? He wants to ensure that he will win any legal challenge when he declares a national emergency.

On this historic day, President Harris declared her bill to eliminate the use of the old US Constitution to determine law passed by a simple majority in both the Democrat controlled House and Senate.

President Kamela Harris gave the now defunct Republican Party credit for passing the Senate rule doing away with the 60 vote requirement needed to pass bills.

Vice President Ocasio-Cortez helped her find the necessary votes to push the bill to the Senate. “We no longer have to live under the tyranny imposed by racist dead slave owing white men”, Sandy said in an impassioned speech before a crowded stadium.

On a separate issue, VP Ocasio-Cortez said that the round up of dissidents continues and is expected to draw to draw to a close by the end of the year. “Hopefully, she added, “most of the dissidents will come around to the correct thought. However, we are currently running out of trench space for those who could not be saved. We will have to print more money to enlarge the disposal facility, if the rate of failure continues.”

“Meanwhile, I’m told that not paying them, is costing me money?”

If you are paying taxes, then you are still paying them. Yhey are not receiving paychecks but will receive the monies after 6he govt is fully funded.

So... where is all this money that is not going to the Federal workers who are furloughed? Is it growing interest somewhere? Is it going to pay off the debt? I do not know but it is not going out to the employees who have been deemed nonessential and who are on furlough. We haven’t stopped paying anybody, what is happening is they are delaying payment.

The Coast Guard isn’t getting paid and they’re still out there working along with border patrol agents who are not getting paid but are still out there working. I know a helicopter pilot in the Coast Guard that still flying search and rescue missions and it’s not getting paid. How does that make them non-essential?

I agree with the Ginsburg theory.

Trump has to have a 6-3 SCOTUS to survive the Dem legal challenges.

(Sadly, Roberts is now the swing vote.)
