Erin Brockovich to lead protest against PG&E bankruptcy at Capitol in Sacramento

Erin Brockovich, the activist whose crusade against PG&E spawned a hit movie, will appear with wildfire survivors at the Capitol in Sacramento to protest the utility’s plans to file for bankruptcy.

The rally is set for noon Tuesday on the south steps of the Capitol, according to an announcement Friday by a consortium of law firms suing PG&E on behalf of wildfire survivors.

PG&E announced it plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection at the end of January because it doesn’t have the money to pay an estimated $30 billion in potential liabilities from the 2017 wine country fires and last November’s Camp Fire. The blaze destroyed the town of Paradise and killed 86 people, making it the deadliest fire in California history.

Bankruptcy would turn wildfire claimants into unsecured creditors, along with bondholders holding billions in PG&E debt. It’s unlikely that the fire survivors would get paid in full, legal experts say.

Noreen Evans, a Santa Rosa lawyer working with Brockovich, noted that the Legislature approved a partial bailout plan last year that could force ratepayers to absorb at least some of the costs of the 2017 fires. But the law, SB 901, says nothing about the 2018 fires, leaving Camp Fire victims potentially holding the bag as the utility’s finances deteriorate.

Should the rate payers be forced to pick up the $30bil in negligence liabilities, or should assets be sold off to the highest bidder?

Erin Brockovich wants the rate payers to pick up the tab.

They should go after the Environmental Groups, who through their multitude of lawsuits, created the overgrown wildlife full of dead undergrowth that allowed the fire in the first place.

Hi.

Can you help me out here? How is P G & E responsible for the wild fires?

Camp fires, lighting, car exhaust and other factors contribute to wildfires. What did the utility do? Not accept trans genders or call global cooling warming climate change a hoax?

“What did the utility do?”

They’ve already admitted responsibility for the fires due to sparks from their insulators, transformers and transmission lines.

For both Santa Rosa and Paradise.

Instead of going after the sovereign as complicit, and/or partly/mostly responsible.

But they were just bargaining with the vultures who will consume them.

along with bondholders holding billions in PG&E debt.

Some are, some aren't unsecured. It appears that there is about $9 billion in unsecured bond debt, and about $3.8 billion in secured bond debt. The secured debt holders should come out of the bankruptcy more or less whole.

Welcome to Puerto Rico on the Pacific.

EXACTLY!
I can’t imagine how PG&E could have ever done things the right way with the restrictions are likely under.

Well the movie was great. Albert Finney’s portrayal of the lawyer was fantastic. I can’t stand enviro whackos but I’m not sure she was a fraud. PG&E definitely contaminated the ground water. It’s an intresting creepy story in real life. I think they still deliver bottled water to the remaining residents of Hinkley to this day.

Ms Brockovich, please let adults handle it. Er, I forgot, it’s California, so no adults are running it .. Let me figure out why is it PG&E’s fault? Did they start the fire?

PG&E should just pull up their infrastructure and leave CA - powerlines, transformers & all.
