The first science-based diet that tackles both the poor food eaten by billions of people and averts global environmental catastrophe has been devised. It requires huge cuts in red meat-eating in western countries and radical changes across the world.
The planetary health diet was created by an international commission seeking to draw up guidelines that provide nutritious food to the worlds fast-growing population. At the same time, the diet addresses the major role of farming especially livestock in driving climate change, the destruction of wildlife and the pollution of rivers and oceans.
Globally, the diet requires red meat and sugar consumption to be cut by half, while vegetables, fruit, pulses and nuts must double. But in specific places the changes are stark. North Americans need to eat 84% less red meat but six times more beans and lentils.
The diet is a win-win, according to the scientists, as it would save at least 11 million people a year from deaths caused by unhealthy food, while preventing the collapse of the natural world that humanity depends upon.
The worlds diets must change dramatically, said Walter Willett at Harvard University and one of the leaders of the commission.
The report acknowledges the radical change it advocates and the difficulty of achieving it: Humanity has never aimed to change the global food system on the scale envisioned. Achieving this goal will require rapid adoption of numerous changes and unprecedented global collaboration and commitment: nothing less than a Great Food Transformation.

Give up red meat, fossil fuels, and live in caves.
That’s progress???
Just yesterday sampled my very first taste of venison bacon. A new deer processor opened last fall, and he makes the stuff.
Absolutely the best tasting bacon I’ve ever had in my 68 years.
Wouldn’t incentives for the poorest of the so called poor be much more effective? Less people, less food, less land use, less habitat loss. Less Disease.
Without disrupting the lives of those already here
Give up red meat, fossil fuels, and live in caves.
Thats progress???
><
And don’t pollute the air with wood smoke as you try to stay warm.
Anyone who claims that a cattle ranch is dooming the planet should be plowed live into the ground.
It could also transform your teeth... Cow teeth... No thanks... And think of all the carbon and methane produced from people farting more.
Eat more cows.
Zombies ?
The LIBERAL LEFT is never happy unless they are inflicting their ideas on EVERYONE!
eat 84% less red meat but six times more beans and lentils.
*************
less fat more carbs??? This is the same damn food pyramid that in 1980 sent us on the road to an epidemic of obesity and diabetes.. NO THANKS ,,, Science? I don’t think so.
Hey, it's 'science'...you can't argue with science!

Orwellian or Randian?
The nation which once held the creed that greatness is achieved by production, is now told that it is achieved by squalor.
Francisco D'Anconia, Atlas Shrugged.
You forgot... and die. Those plants need compost.
Yeah, right. Eat bugs. No thanks.
Not just progress, but the absolute utopian idea. . .didn’t you see Avatar? The only thing left out so far is to add insects to the diet of the peasantry. Meal worms. . .yumm! I’ve seen a number of articles promoting this.
Plant based diets will also change your bowel activity.
So just how many more tons of pesticide would have to be used to make sure the yield of these beans and legumes is enough to not only feed the world but to provide those essential amino acids found completely in meat? How many acres of forest and other natural habitat would have to be plowed under as well? What about shipping of them to regions where they either can’t be grown or have been destroyed by events such as flood? Shall they be sent over via clipper ship?
Words in the article that automatically make it BS: Harvard, scientists, global, environment, climate change & pollution to name a few. Such words all in the same article assure us it’s all leftist propaganda.
How about: if you can provide your own food by growing it, raising it, or buying it, you eat what ever you want, and if you can’t provide for yourself, you don’t eat, you die, and you relieve the rest of us of your burden?
