F.B.I. Opened Inquiry Into Whether Trump Was Secretly Working on Behalf of Russia
NY Times ^

Posted on 01/11/2019 5:34:14 PM PST by springwater13

In the days after President Trump fired James B. Comey as F.B.I. director, law enforcement officials became so concerned by the president’s behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests, according to former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation.

The inquiry carried explosive implications. Counterintelligence investigators had to consider whether the president’s own actions constituted a possible threat to national security. Agents also sought to determine whether Mr. Trump was knowingly working for Russia or had unwittingly fallen under Moscow’s influence.

The investigation the F.B.I. opened into Mr. Trump also had a criminal aspect, which has long been publicly known: whether his firing of Mr. Comey constituted obstruction of justice.

Agents and senior F.B.I. officials had grown suspicious of Mr. Trump’s ties to Russia during the 2016 campaign but held off on opening an investigation into him, the people said, in part because they were uncertain how to proceed with an inquiry of such sensitivity and magnitude. But the president’s activities before and after Mr. Comey’s firing in May 2017, particularly two instances in which Mr. Trump tied the Comey dismissal to the Russia investigation, helped prompt the counterintelligence aspect of the inquiry, the people said.

The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, took over the inquiry into Mr. Trump when he was appointed, days after F.B.I. officials opened it. That inquiry is part of Mr. Mueller’s broader examination of how Russian operatives interfered in the 2016 election and whether any Trump associates conspired with them. It is unclear whether Mr. Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence matter, and some former law enforcement officials outside the investigation have questioned whether agents overstepped in opening it.

William Barr is probably going to continue shielding these scumbags in the FBI. He was probably chosen by Lindsey Graham; who's probably going around putting on his pro-Trump show to build trust with Trump so he can push the establishment agenda on Trump. Trump needs to always remember who Lindsey Graham is before listening to him on anything. Democrats don't seem to be fighting Barr's nomination very hard. Trump should concede to Schumer on Barr, and nominate someone else.

Yep. The exact names and claims are well known. The NYT left them out so they can pretend it’s ‘news’.

Short version; the FBI is thoroughly and irretrievably corrupt.

In the limited circles I find myself in I've notice the liberals are quite excited and believe that "Things are about ready to really bad for my boy Trump". Its extremely difficult for me to get a solid reason as to why that isn't easily defeated with minimal effort and logic.

What really is pissing them off is when I explain to them that not only do we still like the president but are actually ecstatic with him. And he is better than we dared dream possible.

They then switch to just how reprehensible Trump's character is and that he was paying hush money to porn stars - it drives them nuts when I saw "We don't care - he is enacting our agenda and we are done be blackmailed with our morals by those who have none. Further we all know about president Trumps pass and did before the election."

Oh what has he accomplished they say - to which I have a list that goes on and on.

It leaves them a bit depressed and I get the real sense that they come to a realization that our side has changed how we play the game and are flummoxed on how to precede.

Then I ask them how are they going to reconcile things when the hammer doesn't drop. "Are you willing to accept that you've been wrong and have been fed a line of BS that you believed because you simply don't like him" - the answer has been clear its No but its obvious the points been made and they start to worry because I tell them I'm not worried.

In these circles and on this board I predicted very early on, in September of 2015, Mr. Trump would win - long before most anyone outside of a couple of folks here thought he had a chance - They remember that prediction along with others - they go away worried. I get a warm feeling inside.

I really wish Trump would start declassifying and releasing some documents now. OTOH maybe he's holding that card until he sees the whites of their eyes.

If so the man either has nerves of steel or the absolute worst advisors in all of political history.

Is this the same James Comey that Democrats wanted fired up until the exact moment that Trump lowered the hatchet? That James Comey?

This is treason. Yet the GOP wing of the Uniparty aides and abets the treasonous DOJ and Mueller Coup by giving them bipartisan top cover. How sad for the Party of Lincoln to die like this. But 150+ years was a good run. RIP GOP.

It is time to disband the FBI..and not hire a single one of them in whatever agency is formed to replace it.

More evidence that all of the allegations of Russian collusion are just a cover story to hide Democrat spying against Trump during the campaign.

The supposed evidence of Russian collusion before Trump took office seems very thin, and nothing released or leaked so far suggests anything other than deep state actors trying to create cover for wiretapping Trump.

By the time Trump was elected, the spies must have known that there was no collusion, based on their own wiretaps and spying.

Typical liberal thinking. It’s the seriousness of the charge, not the actual evidence.

Afraid you are corrected. Graham needs to do a little less gum flapping and little more leading in the Senate. Put up or shut up.

So, everybody has one.

There 'concern' was without merit. It was a flimsy excuse to start any investigation.

"Mr. Trump had caught the attention of F.B.I. counterintelligence agents when he called on Russia during a campaign news conference in July 2016 to hack into the emails of his opponent.."

Of course that is a lie. What Trump actually said was maybe Russia could find the missing emails Hillary deleted. The ones she illegally had on her private email server. At the point in time Trump made the statement the server in question was in the possession and control of the FBI. Any FBI agent who seriously thought that Trump's statement was a serious request for covert action by Russia should be fired for lacking basic mental competence.

No one, not even the liars at the New York times, the DNC and in Mueller's crew, could seriously believe such an idea.
