President Trump left Washington on Thursday on a trip to McAllen, Texas, that he did not want to take to discuss a crisis on the border that Democrats say does not exist.
Their disagreement has led to a protracted shutdown affecting vast swaths of the federal government that have nothing to do with the construction of a wall between the United States and Mexico.
But as the government shutdown neared the end of its third week, the president left Washington with no additional negotiations scheduled with congressional leaders. In remarks to reporters on Thursday, Mr. Trump left open the possibility of declaring a state of emergency, which could allow him to bypass Congress to fund the wall.

what an opening line, they managed to get TWO digs in: 1) He did not want to take, this was leaked from an off the record meeting. Even the corrupt media no longer respects Trump when it's off the record. Major Garrett said the same thing this morning...basically because it has leaked, I can now say Trump said this... Notice how they use the same strategy as the Dossier; it gets leaked so they use that source to confirm and provide rationale to tap Trump, all based on substantiation coming from a leak. 2) Dems say the wall is unnecessary - media pronounces that as fact.

He should tell the Dems he’s going to build the whole thing with a Declaration of National Emergency OR they can give him the 5 billion he’s requesting.

A president needs at least a modicum of constitutional cover to declare a national emergency. Trump is on firm constitutional grounding in this case. Hell, he was elected to handle the ongoing national emergency at our southern border.
What are the chances that the SCOTUS would not rule on this? If they did, and assuming that they do side with the President, when would construction of the wall start?
I agree. Everytime Nancy and Chuck say they won’t vote for wall funding, Trump can present that as evidence for the Supereme Court that a national emergency declaration is needed to deal with this crisis. Democrats tried to use the Presidents tweets to strike down the third travel ban but aren’t smart enough to understand that their own words could be used against them before the Supreme Court.

He has the winning hand on the government shutdown which is the Only way to get the wall started. If he caves by reopening the gov”t the Dems will claim victory (which it will be), and stop him (and the American people) from building a wall in the courts.

He could really force Congress’s hand:
1. Declare a National Emergency and start building the wall right now.
2. Tell Congress that he will veto any bills to reopen the government until the wall is fully built, OR if Congress passes a bill with full funding for the wall, whichever comes first.
The timing of the end of the shutdown would totally be in Chuck and Nancy’s hands. They can either fully fund the wall now and reopen the government, or sit around with the government closed and watch the wall being built a section at a time with the government closed. Their choice.
Trump should declare the judiciary has no standing to make rulings on national emergencies. You can’t provide for public safety by allowing 1 judge to rule against your actions to deter the emergency. Time to stand on his hind legs and say, F off, not your responsibility.

Corps of Engineers has a training budget, usually those funds are spent building stuff and then tearing it down after the training exercise is over. . .Trump can order the Corps of Engineers to build the wall, using their training funds, and then leave the wall up when done. . .
This avoids the requirement to re-purpose funds with the dems pushing back and the expected SCOTUS challenge.

He has the winning hand, the American people want the wall. In my opinion he must not to accept the Dem position: reopen now and we’ll talk later, which is a guaranteed loser.
