Trump, Heading to the Border, Suggests He Will Declare an Emergency to Fund the Wall
NYTimes ^ | Jan. 10, 2018 | Michael Tackett

President Trump left Washington on Thursday on a trip to McAllen, Texas, that he did not want to take to discuss a crisis on the border that Democrats say does not exist.

Their disagreement has led to a protracted shutdown affecting vast swaths of the federal government that have nothing to do with the construction of a wall between the United States and Mexico.

But as the government shutdown neared the end of its third week, the president left Washington with no additional negotiations scheduled with congressional leaders. In remarks to reporters on Thursday, Mr. Trump left open the possibility of declaring a state of emergency, which could allow him to bypass Congress to fund the wall.

Step 1. Explain the reality to the American People directly
Step 2. Meet with congressional leaders and ask for compromise.
Step 3. Leave the meeting when they refuse (this marks transfer of ownership for shutdown from Trump to Nanchuck)
Step 4. Visit the border personally to get firsthand information
Step 5. (TBD but we know what it will be)

The Politico piece this morning stated that Trump can tap funds from a number of different sources unilaterally, including declaring a national emergency. One way or another, I think he will take unilateral action here.

I can see how he paints them as open border deniers that just won’t give him a win that won’t negotiate in good faith. Then head to the Border with the photo-ops galore get Border Agents in front of the cameras, then give Nancy and Chuck one last chance to negotiate, then declare an Emergency and say he tried

Agreed, I’m tired of hearing talk. Talk and Tweet are cheap. Talking about this for two more years will not get him re-elected. There’s more of a chance that Mexico will build the wall than the rats funding it. Build the damn thing now.

Well he better be ready to go Andrew Jackson because the a-holes in Hawaii and Washington State probably already have the injunctions written.

I think this is his best strategy to get going on the wall and to stop the media onslaught that is gearing up to portray him as killing off 25% of the federal workforce.
It is now proven that Pelosi won’t budge, that’s good enough to be the rationale for calling on emergency powers.

Yes, he's played this out to this ending.

Wow, when you lose “Politico”...

There’s no question he has the authority but I think politically he’s taking a smart and cautious approach. Blowing stuff up is fun but then you have to deal with the aftermath; best that he do it with public opinion firmly on his side. And all the steps he’s taking are going to make it harder for even a crazy liberal judge somewhere to try to challenge any action he takes. Although I fully expect they will try, this might be so clear-cut he just ignores them and tells the military to roll with it.

Interestingly, according to the Politico article, apparently DOD has plenty of appropriated money that can be redirected to “respond to requests by local law enforcement agencies.” So, for example, if Texas and Arizona requested DOD to build a wall, the President could apparently direct that those funds, already appropriated, toward wall construction.

The Dems are trynk to stop him, then people will say he did not fulfill his promise and should not be reelected.

I hope he stays strong and do whatever is necessary and build the wall!

If unilateral action is taken and some leftist judge issues an injunction, it would be nice if there were a mechanism whereby SCOTUS could hear and determine it immediately.

The shutdown and wall debate are inflicting great damage on the Democrat Party. If nothing out Pelosi and Schumer have revealed themselves to be out-of-touch geriatrics. Trump may as well maximize the damage before he pulls the trigger on an emergency.

That's a no brainer. My feeling here is that Pelosi saying NO, will backfire on the Dems beyond belief. It forces Trump to "work for" getting the wall started and for that, vs. being easy and compromising and allow Dems to take credit, he's doing it on his own. He will benefit politically beyond imagination. He's like Superman, building the wall against ALL odds. People will give him 110% credit now - huge.

The delay is a win for the democrats.

To stop the ongoing invasion the Mexican border with California should be closed. When Mexico decides they have a problem and significantly takes steps to resolve that problem there can be progress.

I’ll reserve judgement on the east Texas border because I don’t think the problem is as bad there as in all of California.....It might be

Texas AG must put some pain in the process. Arrest all parents with children present in Texas federal detention facilities and charge them with child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Those with children sick or dying the charge is felony child abuse. Then, under the law take the children away from the offending parents and place in the care of the child welfare offices. The illegal parents and children are in Texas and subject to Texas law

As he's leaving the White House he can quote Davey Crocket...

"You may all go to hell and I will go to Texas"
