The Associated Press reports that 84 percent of gas stations (in various states in Mexico) are closed
and shows a miles-long line of cars waiting to tank up, in Guanajuato (in central Mexico) .
Last year, $3 billion worth of fuel was stolen from Pemex, Mexico's state-owned oil company.
The government has shifted transport of fuel to tanker trucks and rail cars and away from pipelines,
which are regularly tapped by thieves.
But the new distribution systems apparently can't keep up with consumer demand.
Pemex has had to tell customers not to panic or hoard fuel, despite the government change in delivery policy.
But a crackdown by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has left many ordinary Mexicans struggling to find gas.
It seems to be limited to Mexico City (DF).
I have to say it is a tribute to AMLO that he is willing to take the hit when he shut down the illegal theft.
I suspect when the smoke settles Gasoline prices will lower in Mexico (they are around $5/gallon).
