New York City will begin guaranteeing comprehensive health care to every single resident regardless of someone's ability to pay or immigration status, an unprecedented plan that will protect the more than half a million New Yorkers currently using the ER as a primary provider, Mayor de Blasio said Tuesday.
It's not health insurance, his spokesman clarified after the surprise announcement on MSNBC.
"This is the city paying for direct comprehensive care (not just ERs) for people who can't afford it, or can't get comprehensive Medicaid -- including 300,000 undocumented New Yorkers," spokesman Eric Phillips tweeted.
Politico reported the mayor said the cost would be $100 million. It's not clear when it will be implemented.

Isnt it redundant when same people are already covered under NY Medicaid?
My poor brother is a 1%er living in NYC. He only bought his condo 3 years ago. There goes all his money that he worked so hard for (and which I believed destroyed his health). I do not believe this scheme will do anything but wreck healthcare in NYC and the economy.
Meanwhile, Upstate looks like a ghost town.
Guess we ain’t depopulating fast enough to suit Kaiser Wilhem.
Hate to break it to him, but from what I hear, this won’t be enough to keep NYS from losing another 1 to 2 House seats next time around...
Not just NYC’s.
When NYC catches a cold, Upstate gets pneumonia.
It’s nice to be flush with cash and be totally deluded, until reality kicks you right in the balls. Until then, though, it’s all salad days.
The ER wasn’t designed as a primary care provider. With 600,000 people that they will now encourage to use the ER more doctors, nurses and support people will have to be hired and more diagnostic equipment will have to be purchased. Unfortunately (or fortunately) DiBlowsio will no longer be in office when the real costs hit the city.
Believe or not but NYC once had a network of comprehensive municipal hospitals that provided excellent care to the poor. When Medicaid and Medicare began, these institutions were transformed and rolled up into the bigger “heath care system”. The poor in the end found themselves without access to decent health care except on an emergency basis.
In another historic announcement, the mayor informed the world that the city is bankrupt.
What do you have to do to “establish” residency in NYC or CA?
This is about the 2020 census. They need warm bodies, to heck with cost.
Free! Free! Free! And the vast majority will still use the ER for healthcare.
Oh, yes. The comments on the NBC site are amusing.
600,000 people in a city of almost 9 million seems low. I would double that number and after a few years double it again once people figure out how to get healthcare for free.
Say pretty please in any of a few hundred languages.
Show up.
Kinda odd...just such a nice round-number like $100-million. Makes you wonder where they dug the estimate up. Course, if you only had 2,000 illegals in the NY City area, maybe this would make sense. Maybe the mayor should fess up, and just admit how many illegals that he thinks are in NY City, and then the amount would fall into place.
The US Taxpayers bailed out NYC before. See tag line.
America! Ship your sick homeless to New York!
