Chinese leader Xi Jinping has issued a new threat to use military force in Taiwan as Beijing intensifies efforts to achieve unification with the self-governing democratic region, holding up Hong Kong as a model for Taipei...It was a notion that Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen immediately rejected Wednesday amid concern that Mr. Xi is directing what Lai I-chung, who chairs the International Cooperation Council of Taiwan think tank, called a “major policy change.”

Bring our sailors and pilots home, and stop being the world police! We have no reason to put them in harm's way! China is our friend!

[Thought I would see what it's like to act like nuke bait in front of foreign, commie tyrants. If we all emulate red diaper doper babies (AKA, Putinistas, 68ers), the nukes will fly sooner. Don't listen to the 68ers whining this time, when their cities in blue states are threatened (re. the Norks.]

Send them some F-35s and Block 60 F-16s. Do we have any mothballed ships we can sell them too?

We broke diplomatic relations with the ROC in 1979. Another gift of the foreign policy genius, Jimmy Carter.

The Democrat Party admires Red China.

Since Trump took office, California has entered into illegal treaties with Communist China.

If you’ve been to Taiwan you will see it’s a nice place, and the people are nice. Much of the countryside is totally beautiful.

Apart from the political turmoil and likely violence, Red China would ruin Taiwan.

Taiwan’s only real ally is Japan, with which it has traditionally been close. Many Taiwanese also speak Japanese and a lot of their kids get at least part of their college education in Japan. Taiwanese culture is basically part Chinese, part Japanese. And the Chinese part is quite traditional, unlike Mainland China which has destroyed their culture under the Communists.

Taiwan could easily defend itself.

Simply learn from the Swiss. After their term of service, send every conscript home with their battle rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition. Bring them back every 12-18 months for a weekend of training and updates.

Even the most bloodthirsty communist would think twice about invading if they faced 2 million armed citizens. Taiwan’s independence and unique culture would be assured.

Taiwan definitely wouldn’t do anything close to that though, as they have a very European-style, leftist, progressive, top-down mindset.

You can send your sons to defend them.

Not to mention liberaltarians and foreign-commie-sympathizing fascists trying to control the Executive and Defense. Let them indulge in their dope dreams and be deluded, though.

Taiwan may very well vote in a government that has closer ties to China and China may absorb Taiwan without firing a shot.

Even the most bloodthirsty communist would think twice about invading if they faced 2 million armed citizens.

You truly do not understand Chinese thinking, or the realities of China today.

2 million people is NOTHING to them. We have 4 cities bigger than 2 million. They have 61.

Anecdotally, in a casual conversation with a polite and demure little college girl during one of my trips to China, she simply noted that it would be worth losing 100,000,000 Chinese if it meant Reunification. One hundred million. That's more than the number of eeeeeevil white males in the US over age 17. ALL of them. And college kids there think nothing of sacrificing that number for this goal. Think on that for a while.

A well-armed island is no easy military target... but Taiwan only has 23 million people, total, for the entire country. China does not fear the losses needed to accomplish this goal. Hell, some welcome the population reduction.

Taiwan is heavily armed, and has the advantage of a 110 mile body of water. Until China builds more aircraft carriers, their ability to overwhelm Taiwan with conventional weapons will be quite limited.

I note that the person expressing this opinion is a girl who would have no personal risk of being handed a rifle and told to help take the island.

Non sequitur — just because we shouldn’t be the world police, it doesn’t follow that China is our friend, and I seldom if ever observe people of the mindset you’re mocking who say that it is.

To the extend that Taiwan is a part of a strategy to defend the US, by all means recognize the ROC and sell them whatever weapons they can pony up the cash for. Beyond that, I don’t foresee Taiwanese troops fighting to defend US sovereignty in any event, so US troops defending ROC sovereignty is a non-starter.
