Trump never said that he would pull all the troops immediately. Quite the opposite, Trump said at many of his rallies that he would not advertise timetables for military actions. . NYT again puts words into his mouth.

Trump made it clear last April he wanted a plan to withdraw our troops from Syria, but he was ignored. I hope we don't lose any troops because of this delayed pull out. I won't be surprised if we see another false flag chemical attack from Assad, or an ISIS attack on our troops. A lot of powerful people want us there, and even if they can't stop Trump from withdrawing, they can cause a lot of problems that damage him on the way out. He would take a lot of criticism from both sides if there's a significant attack against our troops at this point.
