China's African debt-trap: Beijing prepares to seize Kenya's port of Mombasa

China may be preparing to seize some major assets in the African nation of Kenya, as a result of debt-trap diplomacy.

African media reports that Kenya may soon be forced to relinquish control of its largest and most lucrative port in Mombasa to Chinese control.

Other assets related to the inland shipment of goods from the port, including the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi, and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), may also be compromised in the event of a Chinese port takeover.

Kenya has reportedly taken extremely large loans from the Communist government for the development of some major highways, and especially for the SGR, which forms a crucial transport link to and from Nairobi for the import and export of goods through Mombasa.

In November, Moody’s noted that Kenya is at high risk of losing strategic assets because of debts owed to Beijing.

Nairobi fails to repay massive debts on shady loan for underperforming railway, Kenyan infrastructure ripe for the taking.

Africa will get its clock cleaned by their new chicom masters, IMHO.

Freetown, Sierra Leone is in the same boat with massive Chinese debt. China is actually wanting to seize their international airport in Lungi.

I lived in East Africa (Uganda and Rwanda) for ten years. It was an open joke how each year the heavy rains would wash out the poorly constructed roads (especially the important road between the capitol (Nairobi) and the coast (Mombasa). Then the Kenyans would go to the various donor nations and get great amounts of money donated to rebuild those roads. A large percentage of the funds went into the pockets of politicians and well connected people... thus the ‘poorly constructed roads, thin tarmac, insufficient grading and drainage, and etc...
Finally, the donor nations saw the foolishness in this and quit giving this annual gift to the Kenyan government... Then the Chinese came along and said... we won’t give you the money... but we will LEND you the money... we’re your new friends...
Having abused the ‘grace’ of the free nations the Kenyans (and, likely, other African states) have made a deal with the Communist Devil.

And the Africans thought the Euros were bad. Eventually, it will come to bullets in Africa.

How many armed Chinese nationals are stationed in Africa guarding their investments?

Sounds like a colony to me.

Remember when the Left called any American involvement in Africa as “economic imperialism”. Imagine what the Media and the UN would blare and whine if the US extracted a piece of African sovereignty for a loan repayment. Very little will said criticizing the very serious Chinese. Nevertheless observant people are getting a glimpse of the future. China has a robust economy and a powerful military. It has no tradition of diffidence or reserve when its interests are at stake. Africa has minerals. China needs them. Fill in the rest.

***China may be preparing to seize some major assets in the African nation of Kenya,***

Reminds me of France and Mexico in the 1800s, but I don’t think the Chinese will cave.

Yes. It’s part of the new expansionism. China and Russia are both taking control of Venezuela’s oil resources. Russia is reportedly going to start building a naval air station for nuclear bombers on a Venezuelan Caribbean island—planned by Russia a long time ago.

Russia is doing the same thing in Venezuela, seizing their oil reserves.

“China has a robust economy and a powerful military. “

It would require a MAJOR national effort on the part of the Chinese to project an expeditionary force that far from home and keep it supplied.

Against even the meager Kenyan military.

The Chinese will enforce their interests financially for the near and mid-term, as they have little in other options.

Seize? All I’m seeing is a repo on a bad loan, or taking an asset. Our courts authorize such goings on every single day.

As long as the United States and UN are NOT stepping up to cover for Kenyan stupidity I don’t care...

If we quit ‘saving’ idiots maybe they’ll start being more careful.

It would require a MAJOR national effort on the part of the Chinese to project an expeditionary force that far from home and keep it supplied.

Not if they have possession of a port. All they would have to do is use their HUGE commercial shipping fleet.

Kenya's population is just 48 million. A country as big as China, with a willingness to send in troops who will engage in ethnic cleansing and genocide, could subdue Kenya in a few weeks.

While China could put troops in Kenya, their forces are not equipped or trained for expeditionary activities.

It would be a big deal for the Chinese military. Even with the port of Mombassa.

They don’t know how to do such a thing because they have never done such a thing before.

They don’t know how to do such a thing because they have never done such a thing before.

They may be thinking that they will have to learn some time.

They could treat Kenya as a low-exposure training mission to get experience in expeditionary operations.
