Poll: Russian nostalgia for Soviet Union reaches 13-year high

MOSCOW - The number of Russians who regret the break-up of the Soviet Union has risen to its highest since 2005, amid rising economic concerns and nostalgia for the Soviet welfare system, the Levada pollster said on Wednesday.

President Vladimir Putin famously dubbed the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century and he and many Russians have long lamented the blow its demise dealt to Moscow’s great power status.

In the survey, 66 percent of Russians said they regretted the Soviet break-up, a level not seen since 2005 when Levada recorded 65 percent and Putin was on his second term in the Kremlin.

The number of nostalgic Russians fell gradually from 2004, reaching a low of 49 percent in 2012, before rising to its current level, the pollster found, on a par with the 1990s after the Soviet collapse.

Karina Pipiya, a sociologist at Levada, said that in the past such feelings were often triggered by loss of international prestige and questions of national identity.

“Now the nostalgia is more determined by economic factors and regret that there used to be more social justice and that the government worked for the people and that it was better in terms of care for citizens and paternalistic expectations,” she said.

Ordinary Russians have faced stagnating incomes, a weaker ruble and inflation since 2014, when the Russian economy entered recession amid falling oil prices and Western sanctions.

The Kremlin this year raised the retirement age for both men and women in a highly unpopular measure that dented Putin’s popularity rating.

There are at least 25 million who would say it wasn’t so great, except they can’t.

Its what they see as their glory days. Do they want the old Russia back? The CCCP with all their former states? (Tsarists Empire?) Not sure they want the good ole Gulag days, maybe its just parts of what was the original design of change via Lenin and Trotsky? If they do its going to repeat itself again. I’m thinking there are many Germans also wishing for their good ole days, especially with all the immigration being shoved down their throats. LOL, and they complain about the white race? Relax, they’ll destroy themselves, they’ve been doing such a great job of it in the last century, they still have time to finish it.

Considering the alternative - German-style SUICIDE, it’s hard to blame the Russians.

Something to consider as a real possibility...

Did Communism Fake Its Own Death in 1991?
American Thinker ^ | January 16, 2010 | Jason McNew

In a [] 1984 book [New Lies for Old], ex-KGB Major Anatoliy Golitsyn predicted the liberalization of the Soviet Bloc and claimed that it would be a strategic deception. ..."

"Golitsyn's argument was that beginning in about 1960, the Soviet Union embarked on a strategy of massive long-range strategic deception which would span several decades and result in the destruction of Western capitalism and the erection of a communist world government."

"Golitsyn published his second book, The Perestroika Deception, after the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991. This book contained further analysis of the liberalization, in addition to previously classified memoranda submitted by Golitsyn to the CIA. The two books must be read together to get a complete picture of Golitsyn's thesis."

"Gentlemen, Comrades, do not be concerned about all you hear about glasnost and perestroika and democracy in the coming years.

These are primarily for outward consumption.

There will be no significant internal change within the Soviet Union, other than for cosmetic purposes.

Our purpose is to disarm the Americans and let them fall asleep".

-- Mikhial Gorbachev, former President of the Soviet Union, to the Politburo in November of 1987.

"The more I see and read about Mr. Putin, in power since 1999, and his 'managed democracy,' the more apprehensive I become about the future of Russia and the safety of its neighbors.

If Putin believes that the dissolution of the Soviet Union into 15 independent states represents the 'greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century,' then it follows that Putin might well believe he should do something to repair the loss..."

Today’s Russia doesn’t have the money to regain power. I have more than a few Russian friends who can’t understand why their government is acting the way it is when there is no chance of “former glory”. Russian people and American people are natural allies and will someday unite to oppose China!

The French are fond of Napoleon Bonaparte, but it was a miserable time for the French. Endless war, a police state, and a destroyed country. Maybe people miss the “adventure”?

Nostalgic for the Soviet Union?

Let’s see.....

The dissolution of the Soviet Union occurred about 3 decades ago. People born since then would be around 30 years old and younger. Then, those that were 20 or leas when the dissolution occurred would comprise perhaps 20-30% of the population at the time. Taken together, those 50 years of age and younger would make for more than half of the people in the country, and would not know what they would be nostalgic about.

Somebody is playing very loosely with statistics.

This nostalgia is the only thing keeping Putin from being strung up like Mussolini. Oil is plunging every week, down 50% in 2 months. Russia has lost $2 trillion as a result, and is on the verge of economic catastrophe.
