President Trump said Thursday evening that Defense Secretary James Mattis will be retiring in February, in a shock announcement adding to the list of the president's outgoing Cabinet members after his second year in office.

Mattis will step down "with distinction" after serving in his role for two years, the president said on Twitter.

"During Jim’s tenure, tremendous progress has been made, especially with respect to the purchase of new fighting equipment," Trump tweeted. "General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!"

The way the military brass and GOP Senators are tanruming about Syria just proves POTUS made the current decision to withdrawn. He owes them nothing given their lack of support. All they do is hen peck and back stab him and the Maga agenda we voted for.

You probably can’t eliminate fanatics like ISIS, the best you can hope for is to reduce them to a size where they can’t do much.

I’ve heard that Libya is where ISIS has been gathering. With Qaddafi gone it’s a failed state and an opportunity for terrorists to set up camp.

Syria at least has a functioning govt of sorts with Russia and Iran propping it up. Russia has been tied to the ruling family there since the 1970s.

I don’t know what our future could be in Syria other than supporting the Kurds in the east, and you end up with Turkey and Iraq working against you. Mattis may or may not elaborate on what his disagreement with Trump is so all we can do is guess.

My feeling is Bolton is more of team player than perfumed princes like Twinkle Toes Mattis.

Mattis is a democrat, and is pissed because Trump is pulling out of Syria.

Now you’re over the target. Time to trim the military budget and reign in the Deep State loyal military brass. I’ve never seen a bigger bunch of ingrates after POTUS massively increased their budget at great political risk to himself.

Retiring? I read it as resigning.

I think Trump is tired of the middle east and Europe. Trump wants a strong USA and feels they have become drain on us.

Say that to his face. His stare alone will destroy you.

That’s funny. Any time military building “The Wall” is mentioned you can find Mattis hiding under his desk. I wonder why that is? Could it be because he’s an open borders loving Democrat?

Mattis was an Obama liberal. He ignored the president’s directive to get rid of drag queens in active duty. Apparently he thinks he’s the Commander in Chief.

Time for another round of BRAC. I don’t see much need for Camp Lejeune with the west coast USMC bases. The USMC was asking $3.6. billions to repair a beach there. Camp Pendleton has plenty of beach last time I looked.

If the military brass doesn’t want to be team players I see no need to carry their water. I’m sure the Dems will be happy to help POTUS cut the defense budget.

Mattis has never been in combat as a platoon or company CO.
BN CO’s and higher are back in base camp or command posts.

One of the problems with the pentagon is they are perfectly happy with ongoing wars.

“plus he’s 68 yrs old.”

So what? I’ll be 68 on my next birthday, and I’m pretty fit for a guy my age, and I have all my faculties, etc. I don’t for one minute consider myself “old.”

More so, I think POTUS is just tired of being hen-pecked on a daily basis by “his Generals” and his party. They are not loyal to him and he sees no need to bend his policy to accommodate those ingrates.

DJT appointed alot of Democrats because before this president thing he was not an ideologue and didn’t realize how horrible these folks are. I think he’s learning though and his ideas do line up on the Conservative side of things but for him Democrats were people he knew in NYC..He was friendly with Schumer before this...now all bets are off...but yes ALOT of democrats including his daughter and her husband.

Syria is a Russian state. Turkey is a NATO member and is aligned with Russia, Iran, and Syria. We’ve been in Afghanistan for 17 years to what end? The Taliban today control 1/2 of Afghanistan. Enough.

The UK is a mess with Brexit. France is a mess because Macron is taxing its people to death. Germany has a Merkel and immigration problem and the people of Germany regret it.

No wonder Trump is doing what he’s doing.
