WASHINGTON (AP) When Marines from Camp Lejeune, N.C., were preparing for their upcoming deployment to the Middle East, they faced an unusual challenge: the beach they needed to train on had been washed away by Hurricane Florence.
Using bulldozers and other equipment, they moved enough sand to rebuild a portion of Onslow Beach so Marines could practice moving on and off landing craft and get certified for their deployment. But almost immediately afterward, the ocean swept away the sand.
Marine leaders are saying it will cost around $3.6 billion to repair the extensive damage to Camp Lejeune caused by the September hurricane that destroyed hundreds of buildings and facilities on the major East Coast base and spawned massive flooding and coastal erosion. That damage, they said, has made it harder to train forces for overseas deployments.

Marines conduct exercises twice a year in order to get certified prior to deployment. Part of that training involved bringing ships -- such as landing craft -- down to Lejeune from Norfolk, so that troops can rehearse combat landings and other mission drills. The beach must be wide enough to accommodate the ships, but the storm washed too much of it away."
There is a lot of the world where there are no sand beaches. How do the Marines handle that?
I’m skeptical of 3.6 billion in damage at Camp Lejune from Hurricane Florence.
Love the Corps, but 3.6BN to fix a beach? Nuts!
Move them to the border. Plenty of sand to practice on and second benefit is to scare Mexico into submission. They could practice landing in that lake.
Use the money to build a base and wall on the border with Mexico.
I am curious as to when is the last time Marines actually made a beach landing.
3.6 million, maybe.
Opposed or unopposed?
Want to see a lemon face or faces? This effort will inevitably involve the Army Corps of Engineers. Gee, with the time frame required to do these kind of things, they might still be at it for the next Army-Navy Game!
Just having fun, still feeling warm over USMA’s win in a very well fought game against a USNA team that fought for every inch!! Congrats to all the participants and thanks for the best football game of the YEAR!
Baja would be good but the amphibious ships are already split between the two coasts and I doubt they’d want to change that so something on the East Coast is needed.
Camp Pendleton has plenty of beach last I checked.
Desert Storm.
They can have some of our Delaware beaches. All the summer traffic needs to be thinned out, anyway.
Trees down, landscaping bent - that was pretty much what I saw in the video.
Stayed out at Onslow Beach and used the 2nd Recon Battalions facilities years and years back.
It’s a sand beach just like the rest of the Carolina beaches. Get that dregger critter, drop the intake a mile or so offshore and shoot a bunch of that sand back up on the beach,
Could that buy all of DETROIT ??
border wall
Depends on how many airplanes in the repair hangars got more damage.
The guy who operates the bull dozer gets $1 billion. Sounds logical.
barge—but obviously limited rate of transfer from Marine Prepositioned Ships (if the Obammy defense collapse did not eliminate the program)
Otherwise just have to locate the nearest port that can handle shipping.
Really?
They don't land there!
