... If we had a SCOTUS that followed the constitution. If recent days are any indication, I wouldn't bet on them overturning any tax California put forth.

If they’re already taxing voice calls (and apparently getting away with it), wouldn’t that also be a tax on free speech?

It’s a communications tax. Has nothing to do with free speech. Thank bam my friends this. He opened the door by taxing health care.

There are plenty of taxes on your phone already and those have somehow passed muster.

In fact my cell phone bill is about 20-25% taxes and fees.

Please. The courts are CONTROLLED.
IF the case gets to a judge,
many are controlled through given children,
or their past transgressions on tape.

It matters NOT what is written in the Constitution.

That door has already closed. There are a bazillion fees / taxes that are euphemistically called fees on phone and cable television bills already. Starting in 1898 with a Federal Excise Tax, when it was called a “Luxury Tax.”

http://d1ckf7jq37akqq.cloudfront.net/taxes.pdf

Federal excise tax
State and local sales/use taxes
Others, including pass-through
•Regulatory fees, surcharges, and credits
•911 and E911 fees
•Universal Service Fund (USF) charges
•Poison Control Fee
•Franchise Fees
•Right of Way
•Others

The pdf at the link shows a Verizon bill in California with 11 taxes and fees indicated.
