Wont be long before fedex, ups, usps are going to require package boxes Amazon implemented this option quite some time ago. When I buy something from them, I have the option of delivery to an address or a drop-spot. The closest to me is a grocery store about 1.5 miles from me. Amazon sends me the box number and a passcode via email, then I go and get it.
Used it a couple times and it works pretty well.

I made an Amazon purchase last Christmas to be delivered to a drop box at a Circle K. I used an envelope with the emailed unlock code as a white elephant gift at a party. The winner had to go pick it up.

I keep a mailbox at the local UPS Store for this reason.
Cheap and effective security.
