Puerto Ricans may have elected Rick Scott and other midterm surprises
The Hill ^ | 11/24/2018 | Reid Wilson

The narratives of the midterm elections were set when suburban voters turned against President Trump, women racked up record numbers of electoral wins and Republicans dominated rural states and counties. But dive deeper into the results and some more surprising storylines emerge, from familial ties to long shot candidates, expanding suburbs and new battlegrounds.

Here are the overlooked stories that didn’t get enough coverage after the polls closed.

Did Puerto Ricans elect Rick Scott?

When Hurricane Maria left Puerto Rico devastated in 2017, almost 400,000 of the island’s residents moved to the mainland. Many of them landed in Florida, where Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) administration set up welcome centers in airports in Orlando, Tampa and Miami. Plenty of political observers thought the Puerto Rican diaspora would be a political boon to Democrats.

Unlike Cuban Americans, Puerto Ricans tend to vote pretty heavily for Democratic candidates.

But there’s a sign that Puerto Ricans might have rewarded Scott’s warm welcome. Scott took 42 percent of the vote in Osceola County, a Democratic bastion south of Orlando where President Trump took just 36 percent of the vote two years ago.

More Puerto Ricans moved to Osceola County, about 22,000, than to any other county in the country, except neighboring Orange County. Miami-Dade County was the third-most common destination for Puerto Ricans. Scott outperformed Trump in all three counties — and those votes alone gave him the margin he needed to beat Sen. Bill Nelson (D).

Did Puerto Ricans send Rick Scott to the Senate?

There’s an argument to be made.

"Unlike Cuban Americans, Puerto Ricans tend to vote pretty heavily for Democratic candidates".

They keep saying this, in spite of all the evidence to the contrary, including the argument made in this article. While it is true that second, third and fourth generation Puerto Ricans from the NORTHEAST (NY, NJ, CT, MA) and Chicago lean heavily Democrat, the same cannot be said for recently (1990s and on) relocated islanders to the mainland, especially those who move to the South and South East (what we call Dixie-Ricans). These tend to be young, professional and entrepreneurial, and lean more conservative than not. On the flip side, more often than we care to admit, third generation Cubans in the Miami area are now leaning Democrat, and it is a demographic that Republicans cannot continue taking for granted.

That is the problem with all these "political experts". They like to pigeon-hole Hispanics into monolithic groups and that is a gross mistake.

My wife is PR and she is a huge Trump supporter as is all her cousins. Their face book psosts look like the ones you see here. They want the wall and an end to the invasion.

People from the PR tend to be registered democrats, and progressive socialists. That being said, many of those that fled Puerto Rico were the ones tired of the progressive socialists destruction of their country. I am not surprised that they voted for Rick Scott. I believe it was the Cubans in the Miami area that have now climbed on the Socialist Democratic party bandwagon.

I can understand the PR people who have been forced to flee their native land because of the socialism, and voted against it here. I cannot fathom the Cubans in Miami, who could easily hop a boat ride BACK to Cuba and experience all the Socialism their hearts could desire. Why hate Fidel Castro when your trying to vote to bring the same disaster to the United States by voting for Democratic Socialists here?

My guess, and one I made before the election, was that those who could afford to leave PRico were not radical socialists at least not in the majority.

This group was not at all similar to those who migrated to the big northern cities where they have become ingrained into the dem social machines there. Those whom remained in PRico are probably the same group who mostly want to become a state which would be a huge mistake for this nation. We may as well adopt Venezuela, at least they have oil reserves.

Maybe the Puerto Ricans that landed in Florida after the hurricane were well aware of what voting Democratic causes when the chips are down!

The story of that election is that the Republicans ran a bunch of candidates who SUCKED, and Paul Ryan took a dive in exchange for a big retirement check from K Street.

Most assuredly. I live in Puerto Rico and was here during the hurricanes and their aftermath, and can tell you that our government just collapsed - by their own admission. People here saw that quite clearly, and with no hope for an early recovery, fled in droves. Most are back, including my own family who I sent to Hernando County early on.

I am sorry that you and other Puerto Ricans had to experience Democratic incompetence up close and personal in a very dangerous situation.

I enjoyed my visit to the island a few years ago. Very friendly people. It's a shame that even in a disaster that Democratic governments are incapable of helping citizens.

We had a lot of Puerto Ricansmove into the high end apartment building where I was living in Jax while rebuilding. They were great people, middle class or above, loved Puerto Rico but said it was too dysfunctional...and were grateful for Scott’s reception. They’ll be great Floridians!

The problem for Puerto Rico is that their most productive people took this opportunity to get out of the Democrat socialist paradise corruptocracy that is PR.

Departure of the more affluent was what I had suspected would happen, thus more favorable to Republicans.
