The Boston Celtics' early season struggles continued on Wednesday night with a 117-109 loss to the New York Knicks. Down by as much as 26, the Celtics made a big comeback in the fourth quarter, but fell short, largely due to some clutch shooting by Trey Burke. Now just 9-9 on the season, there will be plenty to discuss in regards to the Celtics' inability to meet expectations.
At the same time, there will also be plenty of discussion about one of Kyrie Irving's postgame quotes, in which he made it clear he doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving. MassLive's Tom Westerholm was on the scene:
Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving had finished talking about the team's frustrating 117-109 loss to the New York Knicks and was making his way out of the scrum when a reporter wished him a happy Thanksgiving.
Irving thanked the reporter politely, then added that he doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving.
"(Expletive) Thanksgiving," Irving said.
Irving confirmed to NBC Sports Boston's Abby Chin afterward that his opposition to Thanksgiving is rooted in his Native American heritage.
While it may be surprising at first to hear Irving's harsh thoughts about the holiday, it's important to remember the context here. Irving has Native American heritage, as his grandmother was a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and his late mother was adopted out of the tribe when she was young.
Over the summer, Irving, who has a tattoo of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal logo on the back of his neck, went through a naming ceremony with the tribe along with his sister. He was given the name "Little Mountain."

Does Irving support socialism? If so, he is a huge hypocrite.
Government taking the property of other Americans = awesome!
The only reason his tribe is still around is because of America.
...and Basketball Players taking the hard-earned cash of poor rubes is even better!
I listen to professional athletes like I listen to rappers.
This is yet another example why ........ not.
Same with “Hollywood stars” and their opinions.
He is representing his Tribe very poorly.
There are scores of minority youth and little boys who look up to Pro. Ballers, whether it is deserved or not, they do pay attention to what their favorite player is saying.
He’s not teaching them well about how to act in a social setting. Crapping on everyone elses’ holiday and being profane is a childish, self centered response.
That was not at all necessary.
He won’t be raking in all that dough forever. May as well try to respect your fellow American better than that.
Can someone please point out why I care?
He was named “Little Mountain” because “Big Asshole” was already taken.
Then leave the f***ing country, bitch!
Poor oppressed millionaires.
Sounds like he has family who can’t stand his ass and didn’t invite him to Thanksgiving dinner
He should be asked if he does. If he answers that he does, then immediately start taking about 85% of his salary so he can help fund the socialist paradise, or whatever the percentage would be to pay those bills. Lets see how long he’s a socialist.
Just like any other rich liberal, they can publicly support anything they want, as long as they aren’t living the life.
Yep. He’s just virtue signalling. Meh.
Kyrie ought to be saying instead a repentant “Kyrie eleison!”
There was a time in the early 1970s when the Kansas City Kings might have been able to get ten lines of text in the KC local newspaper after a game, and the only player comments were about the game itself.
I do not care what the idiot does or does not do.
