The federal government has been grossly irresponsible in its neglect of mounting immigration problems, even as these problems place unbearable burdens on states like California. It is regrettable that states have reached a point where the only avenue they have for justice is the courts. It is even more regrettable that this Administration and this Congress stand by and allow the federal courts to decide the nation's immigration policies.
Taxpayers simply cannot continue to sustain new populations the size of San Diego or the state of Nevada every year. California is sending up the red flag tat Washington should heed.Unprecedented demands are being placed on job markets, schools, hospitals, police, social safety nets, infrastructure and natural resources. Unlimited new arrivals pressuring these systems threaten to overwhelm them.

We need many more immigrants, because our birth rates are dismal. But we need merit based or wealth based immigrants. That is what NZ & Australia are doing and they have 1/1000th problems from immigrants than we have here. The economy needs highly skilled people to grow.
Can you believe women now outnumber men in college graduations? What is wrong with men to not take advantage of the great STEM education available in universities? More than half of PhD’s in STEM are foreign students! We need to encourage those students to stay and discourage chain migration immigrants.
Can you believe we import immigrants based on a lottery system from every 3rd world country? In other words there is zero test for qualifications or merit or wealth.
Can you believe to qualify for a LEGAL immigrant visa all one needs is a relative who is just a permanent resident of United States? They do not even need a citizen sponsor. There is again zero testing for merit or wealth. Almost no worthwhile country on earth does that.
What the heck were republicans like Bush-43 & 41, Reagan, etc were thinking when they had the power? Trump is the first president trying to do somehthing.
Merit & wealth based immigrants are much more likely to prosper and become conservative republicans than immigrants sponsored by relatives who love the free handouts and welfare which exists here.
Stop allowing anyone new for about thirty years.
If we’re talking about a close relative, maybe. Even then those folks should be vetted more then we ever have before.
If it is matrimonial related, make it a stipulation they have to remain married for at least a decade before being able to divorce.
If they divorce or separate before ten years are up, they should be subject to being returned to their former country.
An exception would be if it could be proven they were the victim of physical abuse.

What Dirty Harry left out is that at the same time we cut *legal* immigration to almost nothing we have a de-facto dismantling of the southern border.I mean having people follow rules is so Republican...allowing the dregs of the Spanish speaking world to enter is the way to go.
You are dead wrong. We need negative immigration - automation is going to put millions of low skilled workers out of a job and on the dole. Sending 20 million illegal aliens (mostly back to Mexico) away is a great start.
You are not correct. We have too many low skilled and semi-skilled workers in United States. We also have surplus of computer programmer immigrants.
But there is a critical shortage of highly skilled mechanical, chemical, electronics, electrical, metallurgical, bio-mechanical, and aeronautical engineers with advanced degrees and experience. We are not importing many of these type of immigrants.
Americans seem reluctant to go through the hardships of going through advanced degrees in engineering. May be it is because engineering curriculums have the highest dropout rates. Which is why more than half of PhD degrees in STEM are awarded to foreign students.
