When I was a freshman at the University of California, Riverside, in 1988, I drove a carload of excited fellow Vietnamese students to nearby Orange County. It was only 13 years after the end of the Vietnam War, but already there was a Vietnamese American Dream, symbolized by our destination, the Asian Garden Mall in Westminster. To the strains of Vietnamese pop music, we ate Vietnamese food, browsed Vietnamese goods, and sat in the balcony of the American-style mall, sipping Vietnamese iced coffee while we watched Vietnamese people.
The mall was the heart of the Little Saigon in Orange County. By 1988, Little Saigon was already firmly established, with multitudes of Vietnamese shops, restaurants and businesses lining Bolsa Avenue. This community was populated with Vietnamese and ethnic Chinese refugees who had fled the end of the war. It was deeply anti-Communist. Orange County as a whole was also anti-Communist and quite conservative, but it was also very white at the time. The arrival of so many refugees from Vietnam in the 1970s and 1980s was not welcomed by everyone in Westminster and Orange County.

They CANT let go of the communist roots.
Remind me of first generation Italians and their socialist roots. Stubborn as heck until the ‘60s when we of Italian descent didn’t want to be a “grievance group” any longer.
Hopefully, the next generation of Asians with think differently.
but maybe they’re so ingrained to hate Whitey that they will still vote dem.
I have NO insight into the Asian culture or way of thinking so I don’t know what will be.
That would put a chink in , uh, I mean that would be a new slant, uh, I mean that’s a slippery slope, uh, I mean they need to nip that...... Okay, I’m done.
They get propaganda fed to them in their own languages that Republicans are racist bigots.
English should be our Official Language for a whole host of reasons.
Haha....
No I can attest to it because i am Asian American and most of friends and Aidan online users vote gop. They saw what happen in ca all these years and they hate it
After the 2016 election, I was surprised to read that Asian-Americans voted about 70% for the Dims. Would have guessed they would have been closer to 50/50, or a small percentage in favor of Republicans. - Maybe they will vote more for Republicans in the future.
Jokes like that in the PC era? You sure aren't yellow!
Of course no offense was intended. Just a little UN-pc for (s)Election Day.
Many Asian-Americans (particularly the younger ones!) have been sold & bought into a contradictory blend of Conservative/GOP stereotype:
A) WASP nativist country-clubers who look down on them &
B) Uneducated (and disrespect education!) Evangelical Ku Kluxers who despise their culture, religion, race, etc.
I heard this from my daughter’s Asian-American friends, some who were evangelical themselves. From a personal observation there is a much stronger cultural affinity for “group” with Asians (some people say its similar to Jews!) then with US culture. The “man on his own hook” succeeding has much more positive meaning to US traditions then a “group” doing so. Anyway its not any easy answer, likely many reasons & probably different reasons for each Asian-American sub-group. I am repeating what I have been told and sharing some observations taken from a very small sample size. So JMO!
I thought they would be smarter than that and recognize the Dem agenda as the communist agenda.
We just moved from CA-17 (South Bay area). The demographics have the district at almost 50% Asian. The past two House elections were a choice of two DEM candidates. If the Asian population has ramped up in Orange County, it will turn blue.
Italian anarchists! What problems they caused, particularly in New England.
They probably can if they start killing off Americans.
They go to good universities, get indoctrinated.
It’s not even that they believe the crap, but it’s go along to get along. The Dems are the establishment.
And there are plenty of SJW children of successful parents. White guilt, Asian guilt dynamic.
There is, though, movement away from PC stuff that discriminates against Orientals.
Usually the immigrant generation are more conservative.
The kids become like white wealthy liberals, same dynamic.
One of these days these people will wake up to find that yellow is the new white. We are already well on the way. It is baffling that such a smart community cannot see it coming.
Sorry! :)
Did they really?
Around what decade?
I know a lot of Asian-Americans in Orange County. Believe me - if they have money they vote Republican.
Um, most are Vietnamese, so no.
