AMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) - Workers at the Charleston Water System Plum Island Facility had their hands full over the weekend when the system was clogged by a massive amount of wipes.
"It took a few days for us to get divers in here to actually dive down about 80 feet into raw sewage with their bare hands and feel around in total darkness," said Mike Saia, Communications Manager, Charleston Water System.
Those divers found mounds and mounds of flushed wipes. They clogged the system and caused a huge backup. While the system is clear now, there are still wipes around the facility from the overflow.
"They might do a lot of damage inside your home to your plumbing. They definitely do a lot of damage when they make their way through our infrastructure," said Saia.
When a wipe disappears down a toilet, so does your money. Maintenance is tied into your water rate and it costs a lot to clean messes like this.
One of the divers says going down into the wells is a big task.
"When you get down to the bottom, you can't see anything, everything is done by feel," said diver John Lares.
It's a lot of trouble that can be prevented by just throwing your wipes away.

now that’s a dirty job. Hope someone got overtime for that.
Sounds like there’s a “dirty job” story here that might interest Mike Rowe.
Holy Sh!t! Talk about a job you couldn’t pay me enough to do. I wouldn’t do that for all of Trump’s net worth.
Diving down 80 feet in raw sewage, pitch black, stinkier than, well, you know. Feeling your way by your hands to dislodge used wipes. My God, could there possibly be a worse occupation?
80 feet down? When they go low, I go high.
My God, could there possibly be a worse occupation?
Huma Abeden’s Job ?
From what I understand, hand wipes contain plastic and don’t degrade. The ones that are designed to flushed can be flushed and they’ll degrade.
Plumbers have a saying.
Don’t chew your fingernails.
I think its already been done. I may be wrong, but I remember a show like that, unless it was produced by someone else. Divers having to dive blind into sewage and unclog the works. Pays very well, I imagine. I would have nightmares about doing that job.

You aren’t counting on someone reading, are you?
Yes.
Being a Democrat in any capacity.
The flushable types are not so flushable
Those packages say flushable but they are NOT.
The findings from London fatbergs autopsy are horrifying
I downloaded, and watched this program after it aired...it was disgusting.
Was there some event in the area that caused significant increase in use of butt wipes that normal TP could not handle?
Only one job rated lower than sewer diver.
Assistant sewer diver.
(Hat tip Norm McDonald on SNL probably 20 years ago, only the occupation was crack whore...)
A friend who works for the local sewage authority tells me that “flushable” wipes are a constant source of clogged pipes in their system and constitute the biggest operational problem they face today.
“Flushable” wipes are not “Flushable” unless they specifically state on the package that they are “Flushable”. “Flushable” wipes are supposed to dissolve but “Non-Flushable” wipes do NOT.
People who Flush non-flushable wipes should be sentenced to perforn this disgusting task!
