Mattis works to dispel rumors, says Trump is ‘100 percent’ with him

James Mattis, the U.S. defense secretary, said on Tuesday that he was assured by President Trump that his job is "100 percent" safe after a "60 Minutes" interview with his boss led to some speculation about the cabinet member's future.

Mattis told reporters that he had an in-flight conversation with Trump and was told by the president that he has his full support.

In an interview that aired Sunday, Trump appeared to question Mattis' future, saying he "may leave."

"I think he's sort of a Democrat, if you want to know the truth," Trump told Lesley Stahl. "But Gen. Mattis is a good guy. We get along very well. He may leave. I mean, at some point, everybody leaves."

Trump has repeatedly said he wants to end US involvement in Afghanistan & Syria, while Mattis seems to ignore him...something's gotta give.

None of this is any actual indication of whether Mattis will be working for DJT next Wednesday. Often such a declaration precedes a termination by days or weeks. Often it is accurate. It means actually nothing.

Pentagon Chief Spokesperson Dana W. White provided the following readout:

Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis met with Vietnam Minister of National Defense Ngo Xuan Lich for the fifth time today to reaffirm the long-standing defense relationship between the United States and Vietnam.
 
The leaders discussed a broad range of defense issues, to include increasing cooperation in the areas of maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and peacekeeping.  

They also confirmed close cooperation on addressing legacy of war issues and accounting for U.S. personnel missing from the Vietnam War.  Secretary Mattis noted his visit to Bien Hoa Air Base earlier in the day, where he reaffirmed the United States' commitment to clean up dioxin contamination.   

The two leaders agreed that a strong and comprehensive partnership promotes regional and global security, including in the South China Sea. This partnership is based on mutual respect and common interests and principles, particularly freedom of navigation, respect for international law, and recognition of national sovereignty.
