Global Internet Outage Over Next 48 Hours Could Affect Some Users, According To ICANN

ICANN has scheduled the Root Zone Key Signing Key (KSK) Rollover for today, and it could affect some DNS users all over the world. [What that means is potentially no internet for lots of people!]

By Rolling the KSK, ICANN implies that a new cryptographic public and private key pair will be generated and the private key will be distributed to internet service providers, enterprise network administrators, and Domain Name System (DNS) resolver operators.

KSK Rollover operations began in October 2016 and were scheduled for October 2017. However, ICANN announced that the rollover has been postponed due to the fact that “a significant number of resolvers used by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Network Operators are not yet ready for the Key Rollover.”

A draft plan was announced on February 1, 2018, after receiving input from the community; October 11, 2018, was the date put forward to initiate the procedure. According to ICANN, the rollover is necessary to curb the rising number of cyber attacks.

In an official statement, Communications Regulatory Authority said: “To further clarify, some internet users might be affected if their network operators or Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have not prepared for this change. However, this impact can be avoided by enabling the appropriate system security extensions.”

Due to the ongoing maintenance work, some internet users could face issues in accessing web pages or making transactions over the next 48 hours.

Okay, if all goes smoothly, no big deal. But, if not, 48 hours of no Internet can be very traumatizing for lots of folks. I'll admit that it'd be very disruptive to me--limit access to watch Trump rallies, do my work, etc. Heck, I might have to go clean the garage or sort out my sock drawer.

Some entrepreneur might prep some T-Shirts "I Survived With No Internet" or "I Survived The Great Internet Outage of 2018". Figure if there is an outage, a few bucks might be made.

last week was the great internet outrage of 2018.

And in November there will be even greater outrage from the MSM/Left.

Here are links to a few other reports, mostly reporting the same information:

Seems low key, not much non-tech reporting. But if there is any outage, it'll be top news quickly.

"...but how will people know what you ate for lunch..."

No lie, that was the final straw in my quitting Facebook 4 years ago.

I just finished the book One Second After last week. It was written about 10 years ago, things have even gotten worse since then by far. The dependence on our networks financially, logistically, and even psychologically now is so deep we will be soooo screwed if they are ever taken down fully, even if it’s only the web and not like the book where the EMP takes out everything with it.

What about banking/brokerage operations?

sounds like most will be over the weekend in the US, but that time frame also includes business days in the Orient.

Reminds me of Governor Walker’s rather inane tweets—shopping for veggies, getting a haircut, etc. About the only thing he didn’t tweet about was using the restroom.

My final straw was the Obama worship. Left for 8 years and came back to get in touch with a particular person. Regretted it as I ciuld not believe thebcrap people posted and the childish arguments. Shut down again. Never going back ever again....well maybe when Trump gets reelected just to see heads exploding.

Yep, I read that when it first came out. I had been low-key prepping a few years before that, but after reading I went into over-drive.

My read is that it is potentially everything. They've had months to prepare and it is over the weekend, maybe late night as well. The challenge will be if individual registrars haven't kept current, and then individual server farms, etc.

Last year Google Chrome blocked SSL issued by a company that was sold from Israel to China, then used for illicit purposes. The warnings went out--to techies mostly--and ignored. When Google Chrome blocked sites using SSL issued by the now communist Chinese company, it disrupted lots of folks. If you tried going to those websites you were warned off. My company took a big hit--99% drop in sales for a month. We didn't realize our SSL would be affected and didn't realize the volume of business that came via Chrome users. Hardest part was that we didn't even know about the problem for a month. Safari, Firefox, and Edge users were not affected. They, though, accounted for less than 10% of our Internet traffic.

Or maybe your local caching DNS server will continue to do the job?

Freerepublic is 209.157.64.200....that’s all you really need to know!

Yes, I too have IP addresses noted, though have to dig it out. Not sure if current. Good reminder to do so today.

Scary part of all of this is that my business, for example, is virtual and all marketing and sales and even accounting are on the Internet. No Internet, no business. There is no "back up" for the business to reach customers and them to find us. There is no brick-and-mortar business and no local customers even if we had one. We're not alone in this.

Its zone transfers.
Most ISP’s worth their weight will have a cache to get by and re-transfer the zones after everything is straightened out.
