Only 32 of the 273 officers who took the test passed, according to the citys Department of Human Resources, which oversees the exam.
The passing rate of 11.7 percent is far lower than the last three sergeant exams, which have been given every two years. In 2016, 176 of the 290 officers who took the exam passed, for a rate of 60.7 percent. In 2014, 171 of 330 officers passed, for a rate of 51.8 percent. And in 2012, 218 of the 412 officers passed, for a rate of 52.9 percent.

How difficult can a Sergeant’s Exam be?
It’s that tricky question that asks: Will you ignore most violent crime so as to improve the lives of minorities (as was done during the riots)?
Bet l can guess why.
yep
Baltimore has two options going forward.
1. Hire better police officers.
2. Make the sergeant’s test easier.
I wonder which one they’ll pick.
Not real smrt...
SOP if not mistaken, time to change the exam
“A sergeant who did not want to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the issue said this years exam differed from previous years, focusing more on 21st century policing philosophy.”
“21st century policing philosophy”
Just what is this new philosophy?
Has Sotomayor been notified. She knows how to correct situations like this! /s
Was discriminated against on my Correctional Sergeant’s test back in ‘84. I had a 92, and saw people with a lesser score move ahead of me on the list because of minority extra points. I’m a white female, and there were fewer of us in the department than there were minority women. The majority of them worked in downstate facilities, and outnumbered white female officers state-wide. I ended up having to wait 5 years for my promotion because of those extra points. I lost time in title (seniority), and pay grade increase all that time, and It put me behind in pursuing promotion to Lieutenant. I retired in 2003, and never forgave Mario Cuomo for playing his political games. It was the one and only time they ever gave minority points on a promotional test.
See post 4.
Third option - better training for those who are preparing for the sergeants exam.
