Major Hurricane Michael Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 9 October 2018 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 10/09/2018 4:49:06 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Major Hurricane Michael is churning toward the northeastern Gulf of Mexico coast. Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday for 35 counties with mandatory coastal evacuations in the FL Panhandle. 1,250 National Guard troops are aiding the process and more than 4,000 more placed on standby.

FEMA is already on the ground in Florida; other federal agencies are also preparing to assist people in the storm's path.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Monday declared a state of emergency for the entire state. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal issued a state of emergency for 92 counties ahead of Hurricane Michael landfall.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee city government (Andrew Gillum, Mayor & D'Rat FL Gubernatorial candidate) offices are "closed until further notice." Tallahassee International Airport ‏is suspending commercial flight activity as 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday but expects to resume activity on Thursday.

The U.S. military moved its aircraft from the Panhandle on Monday. Roughly 50 F-22 stealth fighter jets — valued around $150 million each — have been relocated from the Tyndall Air Force Base, while the U.S. Navy said it is moving all its training aircraft from Pensacola.

Energy Production The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) on Tuesday estimated that around 726 MMcf/d (28.4%) of natural gas production and 670,831 b/d (39.5%) of oil production in the GOM had been shut in ahead of the storm.

As of midday Tuesday, 75 platforms and three rigs had been evacuated, while eight dynamically positioned rigs had been moved out of the storm’s path as a precaution, according to BSEE.

Depending on the level of care provided by the facility, AC isn’t the only problem. Other equipment requiring power, like oxygen concentrators, won’t be powered, either. Elevators won’t work. WTH was FL thinking?

Re: Nursing home compliance for backup generators
...But in counties threatened by Michael, almost half of 412
facilities did not meet the deadline to install or set up new
generators, according to the Agency for Health Care
Administration. Most have been granted extensions to the
deadline...

Ugh, not a record breaker, but bad enough. Reminicent of Camille it that it started around the South of the Gulf of Mexico and just moved north getting stronger and stronger.

Much bigger, even if slightly weaker, and is going to do a lot of damage.

God is merciful. Push that eye 100 miles east or 100 miles west at landfall and you’d have far worse damage than what is expected to happen. Sucks if that puts the storm right in your path. My sister in Alabama had Hurricane Ivan’s eye pass right over her house about 30 miles inland from shore - it knocked down all the fences and her chimney plus tore off a section of her roof but they rebuilt. My younger brother settled into Pensacola just blocks from the coast. This will be a rough storm but God shows his mercy even in times of disaster.

I’m so tired of Abrams and Cantori. I was hoping that the new owner of The Weather Channel, would show them the door. I haven’t seen Forbes, since the sale. I knew he had to go.

Not once. There were about five per cent of our crew of 250 officers and men who never got seasick. I was one of the five per cent. I liked the rough weather because most of the guys would be in their racks and it was peaceful. I was an underway radio supervisor and I would send the two or three other guys on watch down to crash and I would handle the machines myself. Made the time go faster. I found a spot where I could sit outside just aft of the forward stack where it met a metal box welded to the deck. I could wedge my butt in and watch our wild ride. Plus the stack kept me dry since the bow was always pointed into the wind. I kick myself frequently for not having a camera on the cruises.

From the NHC’s morning forecast discussion page:

“Michael is an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

Some additional strengthening is possible before landfall.”

Oh my.

“Puerto Rico may not be the best of examples. I had an aide worker who spent lots of time in puerto rico in my store last week who told me that approximately half the aid that fema sent to the island was stolen and re sold by unscrupulous residents of puerto rico.

The teamsters who trucked the stuff around demanded an extra $50 to haul the stuff and then demanded that they run alone with no one watching what they do. Pretty obvious what was going on there”.

I live in Puerto Rico and was here during the storms and their aftermath. NONE of that is true.

In Lower Alabama, but not on the coast, and we are getting some very heavy rain this morning. Not too much wind yet.
