A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Haiti on Saturday night, according to the US Geological Survey.

There was damage in the northern sections of the country, President Jovenel Moïse tweeted.

The USGS said the center of the quake was about 11 miles northwest of the city of Port-de-Paix. It was only 7.2 miles deep.

In January 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killed an estimated 220,000 to 300,000 people in Haiti. Tens of thousands of people are still displaced as a result of the quake.

I was thinking it’s another chance for Trump to remind everyone how her brothers cashed-in on the last earthquake.

No doubt the Clinton team has already set up a “Go Fund Me” account.

I complain constantly about the government on Guam. But, they have done a good job setting up building codes to make the houses here, typhoon, tsunami, and earthquake proof.

You never heard or read about the 6.4 magnitude earthquake we had last month, did you?

They are “still displaced” because wherever they ended up is better than the dump that was demolished by the earthquake. It doesn’t take 9 years to rebuild the virtually nonexistent infrastructure they were “fine” with before; they just don’t want to go back.

Oh goody...another chance to bash Trump for not helping enough. Haiti is a money pit, populated by people who can’t seem to do anything for themselves. They have had plenty of time to undertake anti-earthquake, anti-hurricane, etc. measures in building codes and retro-fitting buildings, but I doubt if they have done ANYTHING but prepare their next gimmegimme speech. I just can’t get myself to feel much for people who sit around and wait for someone ELSE to undertake what must be done after an emergency.

I don't believe for a minute that 300,000 Haitian people were killed in 2010, not even 30,000. Pure BS.

Thank God Obama is gone. Otherwise he'd use this as another excuse to flood our country with legions of unassimilable turd-world parasites.

5.9?

It would wake me up but, whatever.

I don’t get out of bed for anything less than a 7.8.

Haiti removed and killed all of the whites over 150 years ago. I guess they made a utopia out of the area.

I’ve pbeen to Haiti. Theeople who live there are gracious. They are uneducated, abjectly poor and impressed upon by tyrants. I feel great compassion for Haitians. One of my most haunting memories is seeing young teen boys whose hair was turnkng Ron e from malnourishmepnt.

It doesn’t help to have bleeding-hesrt liberals using them as pawns
to raise gobs of politically connected cash to launder money.

There is probably 3-4 percent left in the smaller camps that didn’t (or don’t) have funds for relocation management efforts. Some of those might also be squatters. The better organizations were able to offer appropriate medical care, social/community support and legal aid etc to ensure residents moved back to at least safer and more durable housing.
